Colombo, April 11 (UNI): Two persons were killed and more than 20 others injured when a suspected LTTE suicide bomber blew himself up in a passenger bus in Kandy, an uphill tourist resort of Sri Lanka, this morning. Police said the suicide bomber, in the guise of a passenger occupied a seat in the bus, bound for Polonnaruwa. When the bus started the journey from the goods shed bus stand, he activated the bomb blowing up the bus causing injury to others. Besides himself, another passenger was also killed in the blast. Police said the suicide bomber was an LTTE suspect and investigation was going on.

Two killed, 15 injured in Kandy bus stand bomb blast
The Island : 12 April 1999


Two persons were killed and 15 injured when a bomb weighing about a kilogram, exploded in a bus parked at the private bus stand in Kandy yesterday morning.

Police said the bomb exploded around 7.25 a.m.

The bus was due to leave for Polonnaruwa.

A person identified as 'Madiver' of Polonnaruwa was killed on the spot while the other succumbed on the way to Kandy hospital who is identified as Suppaiya Selver who was seated by the side of Madiver.

Woman LTTE suspect arrested

A woman LTTE suspect was arrested by Matale police within a few hours of the bomb blast at the Kandy private bus stand in a bus bound to Polonnaruwa the IGP Kodituwakku said.

Police investigations had revealed that this woman suspect was in possession of two identity cards.

KANDY: A woman from Batticaloa sector, believed to be the most wanted key suspect in the bomb explosion inside a private coach at the Kandy good-shed bus stand on Sunday (11) killing two has been taken into custody, police said.

The woman believed to have close connections with the LTTE in the eastern Sri Lanka is to be taken to Kandy at the earliest possible time.

Two killed in Kandy bomb blast suspected to be terrorists

Kandy Police investigating the Sunday's (April 11) bus-bomb blast, suspect that the two who were killed in the explosion were LTTE terrorists.

The two have been identified as Thangaraja Madivaran (21) and Suppiah Selvaraja, who was between 26 and 27 years of age. Both the dead suspects are from Porathivu in Batticaloa, the sources said.

Two women among 5 suspects arrested in Kandy bomb blast probe

Kandy Police investigating into last Sunday's bomb blast at a private bus stand in Kandy have arrested five suspects including two women.

Central Range DIG Sirisena Herath told the Daily News yesterday they made a major breakthrough when they arrested a woman from Batticaloa. Investigations revealed that the woman had travelled from Batticaloa with several others through Maha Oya and Ampara to Kandy on April 8 night, DIG Herath said.
