Many civilian properties including vehicles and residences were also destroyed in this attack. A Catholic priest, children and elderly civilians were also among the victims suffered injuries. The injured were rushed to the Jaffna teaching hospital immediately. Defence analysts state the attack targeting civilians is indeed a reaction of dismay by the outfit, a 'reprisal' despite constant calls from the LTTE to boycott the "Jaffna-reawakening" carnival, held at Doreiappah grounds, last week organized by the Security Forces HQ - Jaffna, 51 Division and the Jaffna Traders Association.

LTTE is a ruthless terrorist outfit notorious for crimes against innocent civilians. In its pursuit for a mono ethnic separate homeland for Tamils, the outfit has killed and maimed over tens and innocent children, Tamil and Sinhalese political leaders in indiscriminate bomb attacks. FBI in a recent report called LTTE the most dangerous terrorist outfit in the world.

The LTTE claims to be the sole representative of Tamils. But a group that claims to be the guardians of the Tamil community would not even think of doing what it did in Jaffna on Thursday - killing six innocent Tamil civilians through an artillery attack aimed at Jaffna.

However, this is nothing new to the LTTE. In addition to killing Sinhala and Muslim leaders and ordinary civilians, it has killed thousands of Tamils as well. It has assassinated a considerable number of eminent Tamil leaders from Alfred Duraiappa to Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Most of the 18,000 or so LTTE cadres who had been killed on the battlefield were Tamil youth in the prime of their lives. If not for Prabhakaran and the LTTE, they would have had a chance to receive a proper eduction and pursue a vocation of their choice in a peaceful land.

In fact, the LTTE has been and still is, enemy Number One of the Tamil community in the areas it dominates. The Tigers take at least one child in each family for its baby brigades, deprive the civilians of even basic facilities, pilfer the food stocks sent to them by the Government and even use civilians as a human shield. Depriving the young children of their education and conscripting them is in itself an unpardonable crime.

This is why the Government is keen to liberate the Tamil masses from the LTTE’s terror. This noble objective has already been achieved in the East and over and above most people’s expectations, a provincial council election too has been held to reaffirm their right to universal franchise. Now they are free to decide on development and welfare projects in their own areas.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Government have vowed to liberate the remaining uncleared areas in the North in a similar manner. The Security Forces are steadily heading towards this objective on yet another humanitarian mission. The Government hopes to restore civilian rule and democracy in the North through this initiative which will necessarily see the defeat of the LTTE.

It has been shown previously as well that the LTTE literally turns its guns on civilians whenever it faces battlefield setbacks. This time it is no different. The ethnicity or religion of its victims does not matter to the LTTE. Only death and destruction counts. This is why vigilance should be stepped up.

Tamil Tiger Terror Machine Targets Civilians in Sri Lanka

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) which launched offensive actions commencing around December 2005 including stoppage of water from Mavil Aru to 30000 farming families, were earlier driven out of the eastern province by retaliatory measures taken by the government security forces resulting in their defeat and eviction from the region in early 2007. Further steps being taken by the government to neutralize the military capability of the LTTE terrorists has seen the boundaries of the usurped territory held by Tamil Tigers fast receding, despite the enormous amount of landmines and booby traps laid to stop the advancing government troops.

The call to lay down arms and enter the democratic stream has been ignored by the LTTE, as they attempt to hold on to the patch of jungle in the Vanni which is the nucleus of the dream state of ‘Tamil Eelam’, which they hoped to foist on the international scene with funds extorted from the Tamil Diaspora in Canada and other western countries, narcotics smuggling, gun running, human smuggling and an unending list of illicit activities together with the blessings of interventionist NGOs and INGOs that would like to see Sri Lanka divided on ethnic lines. As their dream of empire building evaporates, the cowardly LTTE cadres who have infiltrated the capital city of Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka are targeting civilians with bombs and guns on a regular basis. The deadly scorecard of the LTTE’s terror attacks in just the past month are listed below:

May 26, 2008 – Time bomb explodes in rush hour passenger train near Dehiwela at 4.55 p.m. killing 9 and injuring 84;

May 25, 2008 - Time bomb discovered at Madawala junction in Wattegama near Electric Transformer, and defused in time;

May 25, 2008 - Time bomb placed in a passenger bus was discovered at Moratuwa and Defused;

May 24, 2008 - Time bomb discovered in a passenger bus near Ganemulla and diffused;

May 21, 2008 - Minor explosion at Katugastota Railway Bridge – Little damage;

May 17, 2008 - Sinhala youth shot dead in Vavunia;

May 16, 2008 - Suicide bomber on motorbike attacks bus in Colombo Fort killing 10 and injuring 95;

May 13, 2008 - Human Rights Lawyer, Maheswary Velayutham, shot and killed in her Sick mother’s house in Jaffna;

May 12, 2008 - Tamil businessman shot dead in Kokuvil, Jaffna;

May 10, 2008 - Indiscriminate mortar attack injures 4 in Damana village;

May 09, 2008 - Bomb planted in New City Café in Ampara Town kills 12 and injures 31;

May 09, 2008 - Tamil businessman shot and killed in Nallur, Kopay;

May 07, 2008 - Tamil civilian shot dead at Puntotam, Vavunia

May 06, 2008 - Tamil dissient from PLOTE group killed in Vavunia;

May 06, 2008 - Claymore attack kills 2 civilians in Vavunia;

May 06, 2008 - 15 kg. Claymore blast injures 2 incl. Buddhist monk at Mahavilachchiya;

May 03, 2008 - Claymore blast injures 2 at Kebittigollewa;

April 30, 2008 - Artillery fire directed at civilians in Siripura, Welioya;

April 29, 2008 - Tamil youth shot dead in Kokuvil;

April 28, 2008 - Farmer killed by Claymore blast close to Nikawewa;

April 28, 2008 - Time bomb discovered in passenger bus at Ganemulla, and defused;

April 26, 2008 - Time bomb detonated in a passenger bus at Piliyandala, killing 26 and injuring 64;

The authorities have the unenviable task of flushing out the LTTE cadres who continue to operate from safe houses in the capital city, suburbs, and other parts of the country. In some instances, vigilant members of the public have been able to assist by alerting the police to suspicious parcels containing bombs left inside buses, trains and public places, where it was possible to defuse these on time and avoid harm. Sri Lanka has also earlier been fortunate in detecting two trucks carrying payloads of over 1000 kilograms of explosives hidden under the floor boards in one of them, whilst the other contained the deadly cargo hidden between the cab and the freezer compartment, with regular merchandise such as coconuts and fish in the visible area destined for Colombo, which would have caused a colossal amount of death and destruction.

Regular search and cordon operations, inspections at security check points, intelligence gathering, are some of the means of combating a shadowy and elusive enemy who functions like a robot, carrying out terror attacks directed by the megalomaniacal terrorist leader from his jungle den and other handlers who would communicate by coded electronic messages to activate the trained killers waiting with packs of explosives and cyanide necklaces to unleash themselves on selected targets. The suicide bombers belong to the Black Tiger Suicide Squad made up of Tamil youth many of whom are women, who have been brainwashed for a considerable period of time, waiting for the moment of glory biding their time when they could become human bombs darting metal pellets that could seriously harm people within a radius of 100 feet. Up to now, the Tamil Tigers have carried out nearly 274 suicide bombings mainly against civilians, and far outstrip the other terror groups that have followed their lead. It is therefore necessary to use the special powers of search and detention to apprehend the shadowy killers, even if it means that some Tamils who are not involved with the LTTE too have to be detained on occasion in suspicious situations pending investigation, in order to safeguard the law abiding citizens from all communities including the large number of Tamils who have opted to live in mixed ethnic surroundings midst the Muslim and the Sinhalese people.

Yours very truly,

LTTE Terrorists target civilians for slaughter with impunity in Sri Lanka

A devastating bus bomb in the southern Colombo suburb of Piliyandala has caused immense human carnage. The toll has risen to 26 deaths of commuters returning home from work and of school children, and has caused critical injuries to many more. This is a series of never ending acts of abject terrorism in Sri Lanka commencing with the many bombings in mid 1980s in public places such as bus stations, hotels, and street junctions by the LTTE aka Tamil Tigers that took over 500 innocent civilian lives at that time. In the past months Tamil Tiger terrorist infiltrators in suburban Colombo, and in other areas of Sri Lanka have been targetting travelling public. These infiltrators were partly unearthed by the defence personnel in spite of the mounting international propaganda effort by the LTTE saying the Sri Lankan government was targeting Tamils. The LTTE satisfies its own ends by identifying Tamils as an ethnic group discriminated by Sri Lankan government and terrorism in Sri Lanka has caused over 72,000 deaths. For more details please refer to http://www.spur.asn.au/latest1.htm

The LTTE has been given every conceivable opportunity to talk over issues over a period six years through a formalised ceasefire agreement by the Sri Lankan government. This was done with the fullest support of friendly nations to enable a peace deal to be struck. Neither Sri Lanka government nor a single other nation of the world has accepted a position that the LTTE had a valid claim for a separate nation within the island of Sri Lanka. The LTTE ended this ceasefire agreement in 2007 through a unilateral public announcement made by its supreme leader and has resorted to fighting for an independent Tamil nation through violent means, including attacks on civilians. The LTTE has been targetting civilians with ferocity with or without a ceasefire agreement in place as seen from the endless series of bombs on travelling public.

Thirty two nations of the world have criminalised the activities of LTTE in their own countries by imposing a criminal proscription on LTTE activities to curb the immense amount of propaganda, illegal fund raising and other criminal activities. After thirty years of these dastardly acts Australia and New Zealand are two prominent nations of the world that are still considering whether targetted human carnage in a developing nation is a clear enough act of terrorism.

The LTTE terrorist Diaspora whilst orchestrating these terrorist acts from overseas safe havens have prevailed upon foreign government ministries, officials and NGOs to hold back the proscription in these two countries. Three arguments have been advanced to support this view.

Firstly, a ban on the LTTE will bring about societal injustices to the immigrant Tamils. The LTTE does not represent the Tamils of Sri Lanka, nor those resident overseas. LTTE is an organisation manned by a few indoctrinated young Tamils and funded by illegal means and stand over tactics by resident LTTE Diaspora in western nations. A banning of the LTTE does not bring any social issues to the Tamils, as such a ban is on terrorism, and not on an ethnic identity. In fact millions of law abiding Tamils who do not condone these terrible injustices to civilians will be much relieved by a ban on LTTE. Many immigrant Tamils to western nations come from stock of 60 million Tamils in India who have little interest in a separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka, and not from the 3 million Tamils in Sri Lanka. Of the Sri Lankan Tamils a much smaller fraction have sympathy with a separate state in Sri Lanka, thereby an interest in LTTE's cause. This argument is a pure red herring.

Secondly, the banning of the LTTE will hamper the opportunities for achieving lasting peace in Sri Lanka. A six year formal opportunity for peace talks has already been given in spite extreme provocation by the LTTE , and elsewhere in other nations, peace deals have been achieved in spite of terrorist organisations been listed as proscribed organisations. As such, this is a hollow premise.

Thirdly, the banning of the LTTE will give an incorrect message to the Sri Lanka government to resort to acts of discrimination and violence against the Tamils. This is the most puerile argument that has been advanced and accepted by some. This is an assumption without a basis. Over 85% of the Tamils in Sri Lanka live amongst other Sri Lankans. Tamil Cabinet Ministers and other prominent Tamil politicians in Sri Lanka have an entirely different view.

The present acts of terrorist carnage are intended to cause public reaction to the war against terrorism in Sri Lanka, and to bring pressure from overseas governments and agencies on the Sri Lankan government on its record of Human Rights violations pointing out its inadequacies and inability to protect civilians.

Overseas politicians and governments need to take extreme care in analysing the modus operendii of one of world’s most brutal terrorist organisations, and respond adequately and in a timely manner to these dastardly acts of terrorism.

SPUR appeals once again to Australian and New Zealand Governments to reconsider its position immediately on the terrorist organisation LTTE and to proscribe it under each nation’s criminal code procedure. Sri Lanka has been a state under siege by LTTE terrorism for over 30 years, and is now determined to end this siege with the support of the vast majority of Sri Lankans and friendly overseas governments.

We further seek the active assistance of Australian State and Territory governments to bring pressure upon the Australian Federal government to impose an immediate ban on the LTTE under Criminal Code Act of 1995. If Australia and New Zealand would continue to stay as bystanders to this prolonged terrorist carnage in Sri Lanka it would be a great injustice to the people of Sri Lanka.

Further if Australia and New Zealand would not criminalise LTTE activities on its own soil, and internationally, then the need would soon arise for these nations to redefine the meaning of terrorism, and also the scope and content of their own UN Treaty obligations already entered in to.

Back to Latest News on LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a blood thirsty racist group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Government of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo in peace with the other communities. Based on 2001 census, the Tamil population in Colombo district is 12.1% (see 2001 census). So, who is discriminated ? Tamils or Sinhalese? Do you need more evidence ?
