LTTE terrorists greet the end of Sri Lanka CFA by slaughtering civilians

The LTTE terrorists have once again spoken out loud and clear to the entire world with their trademark display of slaughtering innocent civilians. 27 persons, mostly women and children, were killed and 60 more were seriously wounded when LTTE terrorists targetted and exploded a crowded bus in Weliara near Okkampitiya in south eastern Sri Lanka on Wednesday 16 January. It was the very day on which the Sri Lankan government effectively withdrew from the ceasefire agreement (CFA).

Since early January, when the Sri Lanka government gave 14 days notice of the termination of the CFA, it had only received blame and castigation for taking this unpleasant step. The ceasefire agreement had been a dead letter in every sense for the past 5 years and going no-where, excepting the fattening of the LTTE terrorists. It was kept alive by the mouth to mouth resuscitation given by the international community.

With this incident, further blame will be hoisted upon Sri Lanka by the for its failure to protect its own people and the consequent failure to safeguard human rights of the people allowing free and safe movement, and ability to get about their daily life chores. A chorus of international and local pundits will sing ‘didn’t we tell you so’ in the next few days. They have scant regard, or the time to empathise with the innocents of Sri Lanka who are being mauled by the LTTE and also do not have the courage to acknowledge the reality of terrorism.

What the commentators fail to acknowledge is the fact, that the LTTE in desperation always targeted civilians. On this occasion the LTTE has symbolically celebrated the end of the CFA, with a mass killing of innocent civilians causing blatant human carnage and human rights abuse.

The CFA has been a goose that laid the golden egg for the LTTE. It expanded its operations, brought on a ‘Mr Clean’ image and spread its propaganda and fund raising tentacles far and wide around the globe. The LTTE will cry out loud and hoarse to the world to hang on to the CFA. For the LTTE to flourish, a CFA that provides protection and cover needs to exist irrespective of whether any peace negotiations take place or not.

On one hand, the LTTE keeps imploring, moaning and groaning to the international community of the LTTE’s total dedication to the non existent CFA. It also shows deep interest to continue with the figment of a ceasefire agreement (CFA), where they committed over 7000 violations to the end of December 07. The reasons for this particular strategy, is too transparent.

It is time that the true picture of the LTTE terrorism is acknowledged and acted upon by those countries that still feel that they could deal and negotiate with the terrorism of the LTTE.  SPUR, NSW calls upon the new Australian Government to proscribe the LTTE as a terrorist organisation under the Criminal Code Act without further hesitation.

A passenger, N. R. Gnanawathie, in the ill-fated bus said she is employed at a garment factory in Buttala and travels daily in the bus.

“About 10-12 other girls who work in the garment factory come in this same bus. I was seated in the middle of the bus when I heard a massive noise and I was thrown on the floor.

When I got up and tried to come out there was shooting. I ran down the road and came to a house and hid myself. We telephoned police from that house. I was bleeding from my arm and head and was later rushed to the hospital,” she said.

Another eyewitness to the incident D. M. Lalani said she was taking her one and half month old son to the clinic in Buttala when the incident occurred. “I was seated about two seats away from the front seat and was holding the baby in my arms. I heard a massive blast and then there was shooting from the side of the hill. I crept under the seat for protection. Later I was brought to the hospital. Luckily my baby was safe and I too had minor injuries to the shoulder. I saw a lot of other passengers on the floor with blood smeared all over,” she said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who has unequivocally condemned the LTTE's savage attacks on a civilian bus at Buttala and a village Okkampitiya, has called on the people of Sri Lanka to be vigilant in the face of provocation by terrorists, remain calm, and assist the security forces in their efforts to eliminate terrorism from Sri Lanka.

Police sources said that the terrorists have exploded claymore mine targeting the bus and subsequently opened fire at the survivors . The explosion has taken place around 7.40 am at Telangugaspallama ,Niyadalla, Okkampitiya, the sources added.

W.M.Dilan Sudharshana (25) : I live very close to the spot where the blast took place. I heard a terrible sound of an explosion and instantly I heard someone shouting “Budu Ammo”. I ran towards the place where the sound came from and saw some people trying to jump from the windows of bus under attack. I also saw a person in black clothes shooting at those climbing down from the bus. That man kept on firing continuously.

M.M. Sampath Thushara (26), a passenger of the ill-fated bus who was fortunate to have escaped death said yesterday was the Weekly “Pola” day. “Yesterday was the usual “Sathi Pola” and there were more than 80 passengers in the bus. The bus managed to pass through Weli Ara area. As it came to Petti Kanda, I heard a terrible sound of a blast. All started shouting. I saw shooting from the woods and the passengers climbing down were the targets. Instead of going from the front door I jumped from the other side and ran. I heard continuous shotting while I was running for safety.

D.M. Lalani : There were about 80 people in the bus which came from Maniyaella. As I heard blasts my one month old infant crept under the passenger seat to escape harm that could cause to me and my baby. I also saw the terrorists shooting those coming out of the bus. I hid myself all the time and came out of hiding and reached safety.

LTTE Exposes it’s Brutality, by Exploding a claymore targeting a Civilian Bus in Buttala, Monaragala - The LTTE terrorists have carried out a claymore mine attack at a bus carrying at least 80 civilians in Buttala, Monaragala around 7.30a.m yesterday. The Police sources said the bus had been traveling on Niyadella road, Buttala when it was caught in the explosion. Further twenty seven civilians were killed over fifty were injured. The victims were rushed to hospitals. The brutal act of terrorism, while ending many innocent lives & injuring scores of people, also injured and scared many school children including nine young children & left a one month old infant in shock. Approximately 60 civilians were injured and those with critical injuries were air lifted to Colombo general hospital & are currently receiving treatment. This mass murder of innocent civilians shows that the LTTE terrorists are never committed to any peaceful settlement but hell bent in creating chaos and destruction under its psycho leader Prabakaran . This sole incident alone indicates that the government of Sri Lanka has no other choice other than to militarily weaken the LTTE by use of force, expecting that at one point the LTTE will come to terms on a peaceful settlement. Just last week FBI Described the LTTE as the "most dangerous and deadly extremist" outfit in the world, the FBI has asked donors to be careful about charities established as front organizations by the rebel group to raise funds to finance its terrorist activities. The group, FBI said, has placed operatives right in the United States to discreetly raise money to purchase weapons and explosives and to fund its "terrorist campaign" in Sri Lanka. LTTE has "quite a resume" as a terrorist group that is credited with perfecting the use of suicide bombers, inventing suicide belts and pioneering the use of women in suicide attacks, the top investigating agency said. The rebel group's "ruthless tactics" has inspired terrorist networks worldwide, including al Qaeda in Iraq, it added. Stating that LTTE has killed some 4,000 people in its campaign of "violence and bloodshed" in the last two years, FBI said its operatives have assassinated two world leaders, "the only terrorist organization to do so." The FBI did not mention the names but LTTE is known to be behind the assassinations of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1993. In its campaign to seize control of the country from the Sinhalese ethnic majority and create an independent Tamil state, FBI said, the LTTE has launched suicide attacks, assassinated politicians and committed all kinds of crimes to finance its operations (Full report in Media Centre for National Security).

Twin blasts shatter Buttala:  26 killed as Tiger claymore hits bus Three soldiers injured in second explosion targeting Army vehicle : - Twenty six civilians were killed in a claymore blast in Okkampitiya yesterday morning. Another 63 persons including 10 children were injured as the CTB bus they were travelling in was caught by the LTTE claymore explosion. The bus was packed with schoolchildren, office workers and farmers from the area. Soon afterwards, three soldiers were injured in a LTTE claymore attack on an Army Unicorn in the same area. “Following the blast in Okkampitiya suspected LTTE cadres fired indiscriminately toward the guttered bus killing 26 civilians while injuring 63 others,” Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told the Daily News. The CTB Bus from the Wellawaya depot was plying from Niyadalla to Buttala when the claymore hit it around 7.30 a.m. The incident took place at the third mile post, Okkampitiya. He said another bomb was exploded targeting an Army Unicorn at Galge in the Buttala-Kataragama road around 9.55 am. Three soldiers sustained injuries in the incident. “The second blast went off 90 minutes after the first blast and the latter explosion took place two kilometres away from Buttala,” he added (Full report in Daily News).

Troops prevent exodus after blast kills 26, LTTE shoots survivors, Children among victims, Fleeing LTTE kill 5 farmers, Mine injures 3 soldiers - The government managed to prevent an exodus of people from some parts of the Monaragala district after the LTTE targeted an SLTB bus carrying over 100 passengers. The blast which was followed by shooting claimed the lives of 26 civilians. 67 persons including 10 school children were injured and hospitalised. The LTTE killer squad opened fire on the survivors while there were struggling to escape. Later they shot indiscriminately at farmers, while on the run, killing all five of them in a nearby village. Some of those who were seriously injured were flown to the National Hospital Colombo while the rest were warded at the Monaragala and Buttala Hospitals. The National hospital dispatched a team of doctors with medicines to Monaragala immediately after the blast. As a precautionary measure all schools in the Uva Province were closed yesterday until further notice. Police said that the claymore mine had been placed by the roadside on a slope which was not visible to passers by. Yesterday (16) marked the official abrogation of the ceasefire agreement the Government entered with the LTTE on February 21, 2002. According to political observers the LTTE has resorted to targeting civilians outside the North and East to divert the attention of the Government which had announced that it would end the LTTE terrorism during the course of this year. Special armed forces teams combed the jungles around Buttala in a bid to track down those responsible for the attack. Police believe the gang is still in the area. Meanwhile, around 9.30 a.m. another claymore mine was exploded targeting an Army vehicle on the Kataragama-Buttala Road. Three soldiers were injured (Full report in Island).

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a ‘blood thirsty racist’ group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Govt of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo.
