Chronology of Suicide Bomb Attacks by LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists in Sri Lanka

Did Friday’s bomb target Pillayan, LTTE Child soldier turned Chief Minister to build harmonious relationship with Muslims and Sinhalese ?

Police are investigating whether the suicide bomber, had targeted the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Pillayan staying at a nearby five star hotel who was to take oaths on Friday afternoon. The suicide cadre may have rammed in to a police bus when he realised that he could not proceed any further along Lotus Road, police said

A barbaric attack

The LTTE once again exposed its true colours to the wider world yesterday. The barbaric attack on a police bus which killed both policemen and civilians in the heart of Fort will be condemned by all right thinking persons.

This is hardly the first time that the LTTE has resorted to carnage in its quest for the so-called Eelam state. However, the LTTE seems to have increased the frequency and ferocity of its attacks after its comprehensive defeat in the East last year and the current military onslaught in the North aimed at liberating the Northern masses.

It is clear that the LTTE is desperate to prove to its local and international backers that it is still active despite the military campaign in the North which has seen the Forces regaining several townships and the Madhu Church area.

Nevertheless, it has not gained much success in conventional warfare with the Security Forces and attacks on ‘soft’ targets has become a more appealing prospect for the LTTE, described as the most dangerous terrorist organisation in the world by the FBI.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that the LTTE exploded a bus bomb that killed 26 civilians in Piliyandala. Earlier, the Tigers exploded a spate of bombs aimed at unarmed Forces personnel and civilians.

The success of the Elections in the East seems to have drawn the Tigers’ ire as the establishment of normality and civilian rule in the East can only mean the end of the road for the LTTE in the region.

The LTTE did try its best to sabotage the election. They exploded a bomb in Ampara on election eve, killing several civilians and aimed mortars at villages in Amapara district. An explosion destroyed a ship in Trincomalee.

But none of these incidents could deter the Eastern population from casting their votes to elect representatives to the Eastern Provincial Council.

They braved all LTTE threats and intimidatory tactics to make the poll a resounding success.

The LTTE has thus been defeated militarily and politically in the East. The LTTE knows all to well that a successful civilian administration can send a strong signal to the Northern populace still under LTTE control that they too should strive to veer away from the LTTE. This is in fact the Government’s avowed goal.

While the restoration of democracy in previously battle-scarred areas and military action against the LTTE will certainly go a long way towards to this objective, global action against the LTTE’s terrorism is also essential to diminish its ability to carry out terrorist activity.

This is precisely what President Mahinda Rajapaksa called for in his landmark address to the Oxford Union in the UK on Tuesday.

“The LTTE is the most brutal terror outfit the world has ever seen and defeating them requires global support. What Sri Lanka is doing is fighting the terror outfit single handed to ensure that democracy and respect for human life would prevail in the world.”

Rightly projecting the LTTE as a global problem, the President pointed out that if Sri Lanka failed in the war against the LTTE, the world will fail in its fight against terrorism and democracy will be the victim.

Our headline writer captured the essence of the President’s argument when he wrote ‘Democracy the loser if terror wins’. Indeed, if LTTE terror regains the upper hand in the East by any chance, the fledgling democratic set up there will suffer. The Government must ensure that this would never happen.

In the meantime, we must all bear in mind that the terrorists need one slim chance to cause death and destruction. Whether they are military or civilian lives is immaterial to the LTTE. It is virtually impossible for the Security Forces and the Police to be everywhere all the time.

This is why increased public vigilance is essential. Even a seemingly trivial observation may yield clues to a bigger destructive design by the ruthless LTTE. Civilians’ tips have helped avert several major tragedies.

Such a level of alertness, if practised by all civilians, will enable the Security Forces and the Police to discharge their duties even more effectively for the cause of national security.

THE PRIVATE BUS that had been completely gutted and damaged in the Tiger suicide blast, near SRI SAMBUDDHALOKA VIHARAYA, COLOMBO-FORT this afternoon (16) has been hired by the Police for service requirements while the other bus was actually the one that normally carries Police riot squads for emergencies.

The death toll in Friday (16) mid-noon suicide blast rose to ten by 2.00 p.m. (local time) as one more Police Constable undergoing surgery at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) succumbed. Similarly, ten more severely injured civilians, Police and Security Forces personnel are now lying at the Intensive Care Unit in the COLOMBO National Hospital. Four of those injured are at the neuro-surgical unit undergoing urgent surgery at the time this edition went to press. Eighty-six men, women and Police Constables sustained injuries.

The short-haired suicide bomber, apparently in his twenties or thirties, according to eye-witnesses serving the roadblock point on the same side of the temple, has ridden the motorbike at full speed before it struck the first Police bus that remained parked on the opposite side of the Sri Sambuddhaloka temple. The number plate of the suicide bomber’s motorbike was found, about 75 meters away from the point of motorbike’s ramming into the bus. The bomber’s severed head and parts of flesh were found strewn across the area of the blast, along with charred parts of his motorbike as Police teams cordoned the area.

Impact of the blast damaged one luxurious car, two three-wheelers, one small canter truck, one motorbike and a push bicycle, believed to have been passing the area at the time of the suicidal blast. Police maintain at least five or more kgs of explosives had been used in the execution of the blast by the suicide rider.

Four Army personnel including an officer, manning the roadblock point adjacent to the SRI SAMBUDDHALOKA temple also received injuries, following shrapnel that struck them. One three-wheeler was found reduced to ashes along with its driver, the Police said.

The BMW car, belonging to Minister Gamini Lokuge received heavy damages in the blast when it was passing the place of the explosion without the Minister inside. Its driver was pronounced dead on admission to the hospital. Reports said the vehicle was returning after delivering a message to the nearby Hilton Hotel.

However, the blast miraculously spared the seating Buddha statue right opposite the affected Police buses with no damages reported on it whatsoever.

Police, Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Army bomb experts as well as other relevant authorities are still busy attending to detailed investigations and investigating into other areas that may lead to arrest of any suspects, involved in the planning and design of the bloodbath.

Special Police Investigation Teams have been summoned to collect and determine the passage details of the suicide bomber as the Nation mourns the death of those personnel in the blast.

Democracy Vs terrorism

Yesterday’s savage attack by the LTTE in Fort should serve as a warning to all those who are engaged in a blind scramble for power. The government is embroiled in trouble over the appointment of the chief minister of the newly constituted Eastern Provincial Council. The UNP is on the warpath. The backers of Pillaiyan and Hisbullah have turned the tussle over the chief minister’s post into an ethnic cold war of sorts much to the detriment of racial amity essential for the working of the new council. Most of all, the UPFA cannot afford to lose numbers in the new council in case of a split, as the Opposition has 17 as opposed to its 20. In the 37-member council, the ruling party has to have at least 19 members.

If Hisbullah sits with the Opposition in protest with three members as speculated, the UPFA is likely to lose its majority. But the question is whether Hisbullah will be able to hold out against a government that specialises in engineering crossovers. It is not only money that talks; ministerial portfolios also do! A ministerial post in a PC is a stepping stone to Parliament. So, Hisbullah will have his work cut out in trying to prevent his followers from defecting sooner or later.

Parliament stands prorogued and battles that were to be fought inside it are happening on the streets. The right of the Opposition to stage democratic protests against alleged malpractices at a crucial election cannot be impugned but in taking to the streets, it only aggravates an already bad security situation and exposes its leaders to danger. The LTTE hardly differentiates between the Opposition and the government so long as its purpose is served.

That the LTTE has taken advantage of the situation is evident. It needs more and more trouble in the East and the southern parts at a time it is trapped in the Wanni. It is likely to step up attacks on economic, political and civilian targets, as it is in a desperate situation where it doesn’t care a damn about international opinion.

The suicide attack in question could be considered a protest by the LTTE against the appointment of the new chief minister of the East rather than an attempt to account for Pillaiyan. The LTTE couldn’t have been so naïve as to be unaware that a suicide bomber on a motorcycle couldn’t get anywhere near a well protected Pillaiyan. The loss of the East is too devastating for the LTTE to come to terms with. And Pillaiyan’s appointment as Chief Minister is the last thing that the LTTE needs at this juncture. With that end the LTTE’s Eelam dream and its claim to be the sole representative of Tamils. Prabhakaran does not control at least a Pradeshiya Sabha. Pillaiyan is not likely to run away fearing the LTTE unlike former Chief Minister of the merged North-East Province Vardharaja Perumal, who was at the mercy of the Indian army and had no backing from the Premadasa government to stand his ground and fight the LTTE after the IPKF left.

Tigers are fishing in troubled waters and won’t baulk at anything to overcome the loss of the East and avoid a disastrous defeat in the Wanni. No one is safe from them anywhere. They don’t have permanent friends or foes. They only have a permanent goal, however unachievable it may be. Therefore, it is imperative that those in the political mainstream not lose sight of the crouching Tigers and their diabolical plans.

The Police say around 96 people were injured and 10 were killed due to the suicide bomb blast .The bomb squad said that the motorcycle which was fitted with 7kg of explosives was driven into a parked police bus carrying policemen to provide security for the UNP protest to be held today at Maradana.

A wake up call for democracy - Yesterday’s bomb blast at Fort: Yet another example for LTTE terror. Picture by Ruwan de Silva - The ambivalence of the international community on the subject of terrorism is best seen in the response to the situation in Sri Lanka. Countries that are part of the “War on Terror” launched with the US attacks on Afghanistan and followed by the US-UK led invasion of Iraq, and still being continued in both countries, have a much different attitude about dealing with the terror of the LTTE. It took many years of Sri Lanka’s lone fight against terror for most of the western countries that are, conveniently and misleadingly, lumped as the international community, to ban the LTTE in their countries. Having done so, many of them, demonstrate a sense of trepidation about confronting the terror of the LTTE with the armed response that is called for. Sri Lanka has been at the receiving end of this ambivalence in the face of this terror for a long time. Diplomats from countries that have a policy of having no discussions with those named by them as terrorists are quite at ease in urging the Sri Lankan Government to negotiate with the LTTE. This attitude is seen in many foreign organisations too, many of which have today arrogated to them the right of being the arbiters of what is right and wrong, the conduct of affairs by Third World countries (full report in Daily News).

FM condemns suicide bomb attack - “I strongly condemn the suicide bomb attack by the LTTE in Colombo yesterday which claimed the lives of seven Police officers and two civilians and causing serious injuries to scores of civilian bystanders, Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said. He said: This cowardly and brutal attack on a Police bus, is but the latest atrocity unleashed by the LTTE on security personnel and civilians. It is a sign of utter desperation of the terrorists, in the face of their complete defeat in the Eastern Province, both militarily and politically and their imminent annihilation in the North. The Government will never succumb to the fascist designs of the LTTE, and is more resolved as never before to eliminate terrorism from every part of Sri Lanka. The people of Sri Lanka are solidly behind the Security Forces in this endeavour. The international community has also now realised the true nature of the LTTE, which has once again proved its absolute contempt for democracy, pluralism and civilised values of humanity. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this terrorist outrage and convey my sincere best wishes for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries (Full report in Daily News).

President Mahinda Rajapaksa condemns LTTE bomb attack - With this bomb attack on a busy street, the LTTE has once again demonstrated to the world its total commitment to violence and terror to achieve its separatist goals in Sri Lanka, and its absolute contempt for democracy and human rights, H.E. the President stated while expressing his condolence to the families of those many killed and wounded in the LTTE's latest carnage today (May 16). Back to Latest News on LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a blood thirsty racist group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Government of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo in peace with the other communities. Based on 2001 census, the Tamil population in Colombo district is 12.1% (see 2001 census). So, who is discriminated ? Tamils or Sinhalese? Do you need more evidence ?
