The United States' top intelligence agency, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) says that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the most dangerous and deadly extremist organization in the world. The official website of FBI in its tops story said that LTTE is far more dangerous terrorists outfit than al Queda, Hezbullah or even HAMAS. Read more...

Tamil Tiger Terror has come to door steps of Australia........... Ban LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists in       Australia Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 ...... Ban LTTE Tamil Tiger       Terrorists in Australia Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 ......

Current Significant Issues

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a blood thirsty racist group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Government of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo in peace with the other communities. Based on 2001 census, the Tamil population in Colombo district is 12.1% (see 2001 census). So, who is discriminated ? Tamils or Sinhalese? Do you need more evidence ?

Are we serious about a solution based on Indo-Lanka Accord ?

Read more about the 13th Amendment

13th Amendment ........

The ordinary Tamil people don’t care about 13 or 17 amendments. What the ordinary Tamils want is to get on with their day to day life, get on with their agri work in the field, chena, sea, or in the offices and live a peaceful life which they experienced before 1983. We never thought of discrimination, aspiration, grievances before 1983. It was the politicians who planted these poisonous seeds into our hearts and minds. Grievances are there not only for the Tamils but even to the poor Sinhalese people in the South. That’s common to any nationality.

See what LTTE did for the Tamil civilians trying to flee the "Human Shield" of the LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists

Caution: Images shown on this web site exposing LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorist atrocities maybe disturbing for some users. Please proceed at your own discretion.

“Tamil Tigers”, also called “The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam” (LTTE) declare that they are fighting the government of Sri Lanka to “liberate” the Tamils. During the past three decades of their “liberation struggle” they forcibly abducted an estimated twenty thousand children as young as ten and converted them into human bombs or cannon fodder. Tamil parents who objected to the forcible conscription of their beloved children were tortured or killed in front of their families. Finally, after seven futile attempts at internationally facilitated peace talks and ceasefires, all of which were reneged by the LTTE, the democratically elected Sri Lankan government decided that the only way to liberate the Tamils from the clutches of the LTTE was to eradicate the oppressors. Sri Lanka learned the hard way that any “ceasefire” interval given to these abominable terrorists would be used by them to recuperate, regroup, rearm and attack without warning. Tigers, once the world’s most feared terrorists, are now confined to a few square kilometres of jungle where they have corralled innocent Tamil civilians to be used as human shields. If not for the Sri Lankan government’s concern for the safety of civilians, the LTTE would have been wiped out from the face of earth many moons ago. Tigers make sure that those who try to escape into government declared safe zones are mercilessly killed, mostly burnt alive and the corpses are displayed as a deterrent to others who would try to escape. These photos were taken by a brave Tamil who managed to escape to a safe zone only last week (Read full report).

The monies that have been collected by TD for LTTE war ....

The monies that have been collected by Tamil Diaspora for LTTE war chest runs into billion of dollars during the past three decades. But, where are we now? What have Tamils achieved over the years? Tamils have earned nothing but humiliation and misery. There times I am ashamed to call myself a Tamil to avoid humiliation as Tamils are branded as a set of terrorists.

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan internal affairs

The Tamil Diaspora should at least realize now .....

The Tamil Diaspora should at least realize now that LTTE’s days are numbered and any funds collected for LTTE will benefit only Pirapaharan and his top LTTE hierarchy. Pirapaharan educated his son with your money. His wife is running around the world seeking a safe haven with your money. Pirapaharan built couple of luxurious bunkers with all the modern facility with your money. It is therefore still not too late to stop financing the dying LTTE; stop organizing protest marches, demos and rallies as the Sri Lankan government is not going to stop now until LTTE who also brought misery to the Tamils is completely defeated.

"Tamil Hitler - Made in India" Prabhakaran, who killed Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is now seeking help from India.

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan affairs

  • They may be strong in armed forces but still they can't find a proper solution to Kashmir Problem (neither military nor political).
  • No matter how strong they are they still have terrorism problems like Chain Bombardments in their capital city, New Delhi, and attacks even inside their Parliament.
  • With all the technology to win space and with all the high tech gadgets in nuclear weaponry, they took more than 30 years to capture a single jungle thief Veerappan.
  • As a nation, collectively they are unable to derive a proper political solution to have a good relationship with neighbouring Pakistan for more than 6 decades.
  • Their politicians are still unable to convince Indian Muslims and Hindus to live in peace and harmony.
  • India had to draw back their RAW (Research and Analysis Wing - Indian intelligence) wing due to their unsuccessful interference in Sri Lanka that resulted in sacrificing their prime minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. So, they have been unsuccessful in this matter once. So, their predictions are not always correct.
  • India is one of the major parties who aggravated this problem. They trained LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists initially in south India including Prabakaran, Pottu Amman and Karuna Amman. They air supplied food stuff in the past to LTTE when were terribly in need. South India continuously smuggle combat stuff to LTTE.
  • As a nation no matter how hard they try to display a big image of their selves they have critical issues in their own country. They have racial issues, religious issues, economical issues, social issues and political issues. It is not the country we see in Bollywood films. Besides it is highly unethical to interfere the matters of another independent nation because we don't ask them what to do next. India simply don't have rights to do that.
  • South Indian politicians can come to Sri Lanka and travel through out the country to see where ethnic cleansing is. All the southern cities and all the offices there have Tamils living and working in harmony. But any of the northern cities don't have a single Sinhalese.  So, where is ethnic cleansing? So better not use unknown matters for their personal cheap short or long-term political gains.
  • We Sri Lankans don't have any other country to live in other than Sri Lanka. So, if anybody wants to give Tamils a separate country, please separate south India (Tamil Nadu) from what we currently call India, just like Pakistan and Bangladesh, and create a separate state for Tamils in the world. Tamil Nadu has all the necessities for them.

I reminisce with joy and happiness the days before 1983

I reminisce with joy and happiness the days before 1983 when LTTE killed 13 soldiers in Jaffna and provoked the Sinhalese in the South to retaliate. We were living with Sinhalese, Muslims, Burghers, Malays like brothers and sisters and that harmony was shattered. We all were one family of one mother Lanka. But unfortunately, LTTE brought us down to ghettos and taught us to hate Sinhalese people. What have we achieved over the last three decades? We have lost our cream of Tamil political leadership sparing only a few like Ananda Sangaree. LTTE killed our educated Tamil politicians; LTTE killed our intellectuals like Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Kethiswera Loganathan, Sam Thambimittu and many others including many Tamil politicians at parliamentary level to village council level. The many youth both men and women sacrificed their lives in this unwanted terrorist war launched by LTTE and ably supported by TD creating a big vacuum in the Tamil population in Sri Lanka. The Tamil minority, once the next biggest ethnic group to Sinhalese has dropped down to third place by Muslims overtaking in terms population. Who is responsible for this catastrophe? We the Tamil Diaspora and LTTE should bear the full responsibility.

Tamil Tiger Terror Machine Forcibly Holding Civilians in the Vanni as a Human Shield

LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists are using 'civilians as shields', despite constant urges made by the Sri Lanka Government for the release of thousands stranded in its clutches".

Those who are expressing concern about the security of civilians in the Wanni have stopped short of calling for action against the LTTE, which is using people as a "Human Shield" in Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu. The Sri Lankan government has made arrangements to accommodate civilians to be evicted from the theatre of war, as it successfully did in the Eastern Province. If the LTTE lets go of civilians, the question of their security won’t arise. Therefore, it may be argued that anyone who laments about the plight of civilians without faulting the LTTE or pressuring it to release people in its clutches is, either wittingly or unwittingly, helping further the LTTE’s cause.

These two officers were keen and had helped the people of KKS whose livelihood depended on the cement industry. These two officers were Sinhala (Island 26, August 2008).

Between February 2002 and August 2005, 2,069 complaints were registered against the LTTE. Of these, 1,693 have been ruled as CFA violations. The SLMM had ruled that the total number of CFA violations committed by the LTTE, involving all categories, is 3,113. Of the 141 cases ruled as CFA violations by the Sri Lankan armed forces, there are no complaints of child recruitment. Pointing out that upto the end of August, the UNICEF had recorded 1,277 outstanding cases of child recruitment, the Coalition emphasised that "the recruitment of any child under the age of 18 for military purposes ? whether forced or voluntary ? is contrary to international human rights norms." The Chinese in Malaysia is not entitled to a second homeland in Malaysia where a large Chinese community lives. Its real homeland or native is China . Malaysia is the homeland of the Malays where they are the bhoomiputras. So why should Tamils be entitled to a second homeland in Sri Lanka when next door to this island is their real homeland having a history of many thousands of years of Tamil civilization? Any foreigner has only to visit Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu see the difference between the two countries and find out what the true Tamil homeland or native land is.
Homeland .......We should note the difference between a person's land of birth and his/her motherland (or fatherland as the Germans would say). The latter is the land of our ancestors who built a civilization culture and language for over two centuries. Accordingly Sri Lanka is the motherland of the Sinhalas. They have no other home land or mother land in any other part of the world, unlike the Tamils whose homeland is Tamil Nadu established on January 14, 1969. Ninety percent of the world's Tamil population lives in India and 75 percent of them in Tamil Nadu which is twice the size of Sri Lanka .

APRC Proposals ....... The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has already warned the government that it would face dire consequences, at the forthcoming budget, if it backs the APRC proposals for a Federal State. JHU and MEP representatives of the APRC have publicly denounced the Chairman for his efforts to undermine the mandate received at the last presidential election for a unitary state. The persistent attempt by the Chairman of the APRC to sell a set of proposals based on the very same report of the expert panel, rejected by the main political parties (SLFP.JVP, JHU, MEP etc) who were instrumental when bringing the present regime into power, could drag the ruling circles into a difficult situation unless remedial action is taken in time.

Open Warrant Issued to Arrest Prabhakaran

High Court judge Sarath Ambepitiya issued an open warrant through the CID to arrest Prabhakaran and three others who were absconding. He said the LTTE leader was guilty on 51 counts and each count carried 20 years in jail making a total of 1020 years. But for practical purposes the Judge said he was imposing the sentence only on the first ten counts making a total of 200 years in jail.

Also known as
The Tamil Tigers, the Eellalan Force, the Ellalan Force, the Tiger Movement, the Sangilian Force, the Air Tigers, the Black Tigers (Karum Puligal), the Sea Tigers, the Tiger Organization Security Intelligence Service (TOSIS), the Women's Combat Force of Liberation Tigers (WCFLT)

Description
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a Sri Lankan-based organization which advocates the creation of an independent homeland in the north and northeastern part of Sri Lanka which it has called "Tamil Eelam". Its war against the government of Sri Lanka has been fought on three fronts: a political campaign, guerrilla warfare, and a terrorist campaign. The LTTE is committed to using a variety of terror tactics in order to achieve its objectives, including attacking political, economic, religious and cultural targets, as well as targeting civilians. The LTTE's campaign has included plans to create Tamil-only northern and eastern provinces, and to this end it has aggressively expelled non-Tamils from these regions. The LTTE also endeavours to eliminate moderate Tamils and other Tamil militant groups that compete with it for influence and power within the Sri Lankan Tamil community.

World Tamil Movement

Description
The World Tamil Movement, created in 1986, is the leading front organization for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Canada. The various offices of the WTM in Canada transfer funds to bank accounts in Sri Lanka meant for the LTTE. The leadership of the WTM acts at the direction of leaders of the LTTE. WTM representatives canvas areas in Canada with large Tamil populations demanding large donations on behalf of the LTTE. Refusals to contribute often lead to threats and intimidation.

Humanitarian operations continue to free Tamil civilians from the "Human Shield of Prabhakaran"

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appeals Tamil civilians of the "Human Shield of Prabhakaran"....

"I am aware of the tremendous difficulties faced by the civilians who are unfortunately still being held hostage by the LTTE in the 'no-fire zone'. "Your suffering is prolonged by this action of the LTTE who are holding you as a human shield for their own safety and security. "I appeal to every one of you to come over to the cleared areas. My government will continue to give utmost priority to ensure the safety and welfare of each and every one of you."

Now it is the time to offer U$ 1 or 2 Million cash prize for the "head of LTTE Leader Prabhakaran".

A public announcement that so much of millions of rupees will be offered for the head of Prabhakaran will bring emotional pressure to Prabhakaran and he will suspect every one around him. Under pressure, he may even bite the cyanide capsule (read more)

Time to Put a Price Tag on Prabhakaran's Head - By Malin Abeyatunga, Melbourne, Australia - Prabhakaran is a wanted criminal by Interpol. Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman are wanted by India for the assassination of their son of soil Rajiv Gandhi. Prabhakran has been sentenced to 200 years for his involvement in Central Bank bombing. In addition to the above, Prabhakran is accountable for the deaths of President Premadasa, Ministers Lakshman Kadirgamar, Fernadopulle, Dassanayake, Gamini Dissanayake, HV Gunaratna, Lalith Athulathmudali, Ranjan Wijeratna to name a few. Prabhakaran is behind the killing of Alfred Duraiappah, Rajini Thiranagama, Jaffna Mayor, Sam Thambimuttu, Amirthalingam,Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Kethisweran Loganathan. Prabhakaran is responsible for exterminating all opposing Tamil politicians. Prabhakaran is accountable for all ethnic cleansing of Sinhalese and Muslims from their villages. Prabhakaran is accountable for the bombing of Buddhist most sacred place Dalada Maligawa, killing hundred of Buddhist devotees at Sri Maha Boodhiya., killing over hundred Muslim prayers in a mosque in Kattankuddy. He is responsible of the massacre of 39 Buddhist monks in Aranthalawe. Prabhakaran has blood in his hands of ordering the killing of 649 policemen who surrendered to LTTE at the request of then President Premadasa. Prabhakaran is accountable for numerous bombs and suicide attacks on public places like  Katunayake air port, public trains, buses, shopping malls killing hundreds of civilians. The killing list of Prabhakaran is exhaustive and this is just a few of his killings off the war zone. He is not an ordinary killer but a sadistic killer. Now this maniac killer is hiding behind the innocent Tamil civilians to save his life. He should be captured dead or alive before he makes his last bid to escape. USA offered a couple of million dollars for the head of Sadam Hussein and succeeded and most probably a  tip of his hide out would have come from inside for the allied forces to capture him alive (read full letter in SPUR).

War won’t stop until Prabhakaran is taken, dead or alive Gota tells Miliband and Kouchner - "My problem is not what the LTTE will do to you," the Defence Secretary said laughing, "instead it is that should such a thing happen, we would not be able to take Prabhakaran as planned!" He said after thirty years, the time had come finally for Prabhakaran and other terrorist leaders to be captured dead or alive and the government would not stop until that end was achieved. Defence Sectary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday rejected visiting British Foreign Secretary David Miliband’s call for a ceasefire and access for aid workers to the civilian zone, and told him that the government would not stop its war on terror until the LTTE was crushed and its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran captured, dead or alive. According to highly placed sources, briefing a British delegation that included the British Foreign Secretary, British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Dr. Peter Hayes and two other diplomats, at the Foreign Ministry, yesterday morning the Defence Secretary did not mince his words, when he said it was Sri Lankan troops and civilians who had perished in the conflict and therefore the government was determined to finish off the LTTE. He said humanitarian concerns were only a ploy employed by some people to extricate Prabhakaran and his top leaders from the mess they had got into. He said a truce would only help the LTTE to regroup (Full report in Island).

Inexperienced Milliband cannot hold a patch to President Rajapaksa - By Malin Abeyatunge, Melbourne, Australia - Gordon Brown , David Milliband (or Sillyband) and their colleagues who were ferociously campaigning the LTTE slogan ‘for a cease fire” is getting the taste of their own medicine in their own back yard when the unruly LTTE street mobs started attacking the Indian High commission (for the 2nd time) and the Sri Lanka HC causing damages to the buildings. The Metropolitan Police has also got a taste of their own medicine for their leniency in making arrests when some Cops got injured from the unruly LTTE mobs. The London citizens and commuters have been experiencing a bitter pill over the past two months with day and night LTTE rallies and demonstrations bringing them inconvenience to their day to day life, commuting to and from their work places, causing traffic jams etc. The Metropolitan Police who were chasing after a few Pakistanis completely ignored the mayhem created by LTTE apologists and activists on the streets of London. LTTE is a banned terrorist organization and the Metro Police is allowing them to carry their Tiger flags along with the British flags and rule the London streets in the way they want. Why are this double standards  Gordon/Milliband?  You should be ashamed of yourselves of what’s happening on your streets .It’s a known fact that the  Lord Mayors allow the apologists of this terrorist outfit (infamous Lord Kensington) to continue their fund raising for LTTE unabated and unchecked. To support the LTTE activists, there are MPS like Simon Hughes, Keith Vaz and a few others who may be receiving perks from LTTE for speaking for them like Bruce Fein in States and to depend on Tamil votes for their survival. The days of the honest gentlemen among British politicians have become a thing in the past (Read full in SPUR).

Miliband, Kouchner admit their mission a failure - The visiting Foreign Ministers of Britain and France David Miliband and Bernard Kouchner yesterday evening told the media at a hurriedly summoned press conference in Colombo that their efforts to make the Sri Lankan government to agree to a ceasefire had come a cropper. Calling upon the LTTE to release civilians it was holding forcibly in the no fire zone, Miliband said, "Sri Lanka’s military advances have been spectacular but winning the peace is as vital as winning the war." He said he wished to stress that the purpose of the EU’s call for a ceasefire was to help only civilians and not the LTTE. Kouchner said. "We tried very hard, we insisted and we insisted, but it is up to our friends to allow it or not." (Island).

Tails exposed - British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who have undertaken a diabolical mission to save, on a flimsy pretext, a bunch of separatist terrorists being pursued by the national military of a sovereign state, will find themselves in the exalted company of Hitler and Prabhakaran in the annals of world history. Yesterday, they failed yet another time to make the Sri Lankan government end its war on terror. That Miliband and Kouchner, who are opposing Sri Lanka's war, are not driven by humanitarian concerns at all is clear in that they are not campaigning against the US-led war in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq alone war has resulted in deaths of over half a million children. That is the human cost of getting rid of a single dictator and effecting a regime change. In 1996,US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, as we pointed out the other day, had the temerity to say it was worth the price. If the soft hearts of Miliband and Kouchner are really melting for humanity, they must rush where their services are needed most – Iraq and Afghanistan – together with their US counterpart Hillary Clinton (Full Editorial in Island).

European mission lacks vision - By H. L. D. Mahindapala - The mission of the two visiting Foreign Ministers – David Miliband from UK and Bernard Kouchner from France – has only one main objective: to stop the military offensive of the Sri Lankan forces which has released tens of thousands of Tamil civilians held captive by the Tamil Tigers. If the military offensive had not breached the sand bank constructed by the Tigers to fence in the Tamil civilians, there would have been no way out for them. They would have been kept as prisoners and used as cannon fodder by the Tigers. Saving Tamil civilians and consequently human rights of the victims of Prabhakaran has been one of the most positive aspects of the entire military operation. From Mavil Aru in July 2006 to Mullativu in 2009 it is the military operations that advanced to save the Tamil people from the clutches of Velupillai Prabhakaran. So what is the rationale for the halting the war at this late stage when such a move would neither help the Tamils held as captives, nor the rest of the nation waiting for the war to end? The priority now is to end the war and not to save Prabhakaran, which can be achieved only by halting the war. The two Foreign Ministers are not babes in the woods who cannot grasp the horrendous consequences of their move, if it succeeds. The hope of the war-weary Sri Lankans is that their mission will fail. If by any chance they succeeded in halting the war they should be held responsible for their irresponsible and immoral conduct of prolonging a war that could have ended in days (Full report in Island).

Kouchner, Miliband condemn LTTE For holding the civilian population hostage in the 'No Fire Zone': The French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Dr. Bernard Kouchner and Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom David Miliband on an official visit to Sri Lanka at the Invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama, condemned the LTTE for holding the civilian population hostage in the 'No Fire Zone'. During their visit, Foreign Minister Kouchner and Foreign Secretary Miliband called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and had a cordial discussion on the present developments. They also visited the IDP welfare centres in Vavuniya, and the Field Hospital donated by the French Government in Chettikulam. The visit takes place against the background of the current developments in the North of Sri Lanka, in particular the recent security forces action to liberate approximately 120,000 civilians, who were held hostage by the LTTE. The two delegations also had an opportunity to see an audio visual presentation including UAV footage of the humanitarian rescue operation by the Security Forces. While welcoming the two visiting dignitaries, Foreign Minister Bogollagama stated that we are encouraged by the continued interest and concerns expressed by France and the UK on developments in Sri Lanka. He further stated that we are on the threshold of defeating terrorism and are embarking on an era of lasting peace and security for all our people. He spoke of the huge task of the humanitarian relief operations in place and thanked the UN, ICRC and the international community that are providing assistance to the Government of Sri Lanka (Full report in Daily News).

JHU protests against int'l interference - The Jathika Hela Urumaya protested outside the British High Commission yesterday against what they claim as international interference to an internal problem of Sri Lanka. Ven Ellawala Medhananda Thera of the JHU said this is our first step to protect the country from foreign countries like France and UK. "Everyone knows how the British people treated us. Our history gives evidence to that. Why do they come to protect our civilians at this moment? They should have come before. "Now we are at the very end of the war. So we don't need the help of those countries' now. I know that our President, Defence Secretary and other authorities will never stop this fight to win freedom to the country. "We are ready to support them and all patriotic people are always with us to protect our motherland." (Daily News).

Ceasefire not our aim - Miliband Concern, civilians in NFZ only: - No one was here to call a ceasefire to save Prabhakaran but we are here to discuss the protection of civilians that was our absolute and paramount interest. The LTTE should stop fighting, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Secretary of State David Miliband told at a press conference at the Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday. ”The LTTE was a proscribed and banned organization in our countries and they are holding citizens in the No Fire Zone. The LTTE had killed civilians in buses and shopping areas. Our concern was about the civilians, held by the LTTE in the No Fire Zone and other civilians in the IDP camps, Miliband said. ”We would discuss with the Sri Lankan Government, UN agencies, ICRC and the opposition how the international community could support the civilians in the NFZ,” he noted. Answering a question about attacks on Sri Lankan embassies in Europe he said: “We condemn attacks not only in our country but in any other country.” There were also innocent Tamils who were not supporting the LTTE and we cannot lock them up but we were trying to bring about a political change (Full report in Daily News).

Tamil defector claims Tigers killed 200 civilians - A former spokesman for the Tamil Tigers who surrendered last week has accused the rebels of shooting dead at least 200 civilians and forcibly recruiting children as young as 13. Velayudam Dayanidi, better known as Daya Master, made the accusations in a video interview released today on the Sri Lanka Defence Ministry's website ten days after surrendering with V.K. Pencharatnam, known as George, a former aide to the Tigers' late political chief. Both appeared in the video and seemed to be relaxed and in good health, but it was not possible to speak to them directly or to verify whether the interview was conducted under duress. The interview was released as David Miliband, the British Foreign Secretary, and his French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner, arrived in Sri Lanka to press for a ceasefire to allow aid agencies to reach tens of thousands of civilians trapped with the last of the Tigers in a 3.8-square-mile strip of land on the northeastern coast (Full report in Times-Online).

GEORGE MASTER OF THE LTTE WHO SURRENDERED SAYS NOW THE TAMILS REALIZE IT TOOK SO LONG TO CRUSH LTTE FOR ARMY’S CONCERN FOR CIVILIANS - By Walter Jayawardhana - George Master , the former language interpreter of the Late Thamil Selvam, the former political head of the LTTE terrorist outfit said he and the Tamil civilians who surrendered to the army now fully realize that the army is implementing its humanitarian offensive so slowly to keep the civilian toll, which might come as fall out, as low as possible.  George Master was being interviewed by the state owned Independent Television Network. He said it was the practice of the LTTE to shoot at civilians who are fleeing from their human shield and blame those deaths on the Sri Lanka Army. He said he has heard many Tamil civilians talk about the fact that if the armed forces wanted it they could have rapidly crushed the LTTE without any concern for the civilians in a brief period, but it did not do it. George Master said it could have been finished in a day or two. George Master said it was very regretful, that so many good leaders have been eliminated by the LTTE in the past. “Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, an army spokesman, said his forces had advanced almost another mile into the last patch of rebel-controlled territory – now believed to be less than five square miles – when it overpowered Tamil Tiger fighters at a defensive earthwork. The mud mound and moat was half a mile long and defended by a home-made armoured vehicle, he said. Seven Tiger suicide bombers had been killed in the operation, he added. “The military also said that it had fought a battle with so-called Sea Tigers off the north-west coast of the island. It claimed that six gunboats had been sunk with the loss of 25 rebels. There was no confirmation from the Tamil Tigers.”

Kiwi proposal to revive LTTE thwarted - by Walter JAYAWARDHANA - At a glance the motion looked like a very progressive one asking for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka but the Maori Party Member of New Zealand , who represent the native people of New Zealand , Te Ururoa Flavell knew better. Using his powers as a MP he blocked the motion, because the resolution simply wanted to revive the world most cruel terrorist group, the LTTE and pull it out of the grave. Maoris are the proud natives of New Zealand, who inhabited the Pacific island before the white man invaded . But Progressive leader Jim Anderton is upset a Maori Party MP blocked a parliamentary motion expressing concern about the humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka, a New Zealand website said. Anderton said his motion was not about taking sides in a bitter conflict that the United Nations estimates has resulted in 200,000 civilians fleeing their homes, 4500 deaths and 12,000 people wounded since January (Daily News).

Freeing civilians, Government’s key objective - President - In an interview to CNN-IBN in Colombo, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has made it clear that the Government’s key objective now was “getting the civilians out from the clutches of the LTTE”. Noting that the military operations were “almost over,” the President said the choice before the LTTE was “either surrender or face the Army”. The interview: (Full report in Daily News).

When is genocide not genocide? - By C. Wijeyawickrema - "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean different things." "The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master-that's all." A crime without a name   In August 1941, Winston Churchill delivered a speech on the BBC citing that the Nazi armies were advancing exterminating whole districts in Europe. He thundered, as quoted in her book, "A Problem from hell"-American and the age of genocide" by Samantha Power (2003), "We are in the presence of a crime without a name." (p. 29). Raphael Lemkin, a Polish Jew and international lawyer who lost all his relatives during Nazi war decided to find a name for the crime and he coined the name "genocide." Lemkin would not have expected what was in store for his labor. Recently, white politicians and corrupt NGO agents exploited the word as a cover for selfish-nefarious purposes. Even private individuals joined in the game. For example, the American lawyer Bruce Fein uses the word genocide frequently because allegedly, he gets $30,000 per month from the owners of the Tamils against genocide website. Arundhati Roy fears of an impending genocide in the No Fire Zone in Sri Lanka. She has had a journalist's crush on her hero Prabakaran (ref. The Island, 4/28/2009, essay by Kalana Senaratne)  (Read full report in SPUR).

Open letter to Hillary Clinton - Neville Ladduwahetty - During the recent Congressional hearings you stated: "I think that the Sri Lankan government knows that the entire world is very disappointed that in its efforts to end what it sees as 25 years of conflict, it is causing such untold suffering". The habit of speaking for the whole world is a carry-over from the past and is at variance with the posture taken by President Obama; a position enunciated during his recent visit to Europe where he stated that while the US remains the sole super power it was not going to lecture others. Despite this changed perspective, to continue to speak for the whole world is a matter of deep concern, particularly after China which represents nearly 1/6 of the world endorsed the manner in which Sri Lanka was handling the threats and challenges posed by the LTTE (Full letter in Island).

Navy thwarts Sea Tiger attack on advancing ground troops; Six Sea Tiger boats destroyed, 25 Sea Tigers killed - The Navy’s elite Special Boat Squadron and Fast Attack Craft destroyed six Sea Tiger boats, killing 25 Sea Tigers, including three leaders, in the seas of Wellamullai off Mullaitivu early yesterday morning, Navy sources said. Naval troops engaged a combined cluster of sea tiger suicide and attack craft in their berth in the ‘No Fire’ zone attempting to set off on a mission to attack the advancing ground troops. Four suicide craft laden with high explosives and two attack craft mounted with high caliber weapons were destroyed by Navy fire. An SLN craft was slightly damaged and one sailor injured. The round-the-clock vigilance maintained by Naval troops on continuous patrolling close to the now-fast-weakening Tiger stronghold, has been instrumental in thwarting the desperate last-ditch Sea Tiger attacks on ground troops. The Navy said its fortifications have been tightened with multiple defence barriers consisting of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Fast Gun Boats (FGBs), Fast Attack Craft (FACs), the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) and the Special Boat Squadron (SBS). Continuous shore-based radar surveillance is also being carried out in order to compliment Naval units to prevent remaining LTTE cadres from launching desperate attacks on advancing Security Forces personnel and to cut off attempts of Tiger leaders trapped in the ‘NO Fire’ zone to escape (Full report in Island).

British, French FMs meet President - President Mahinda Rajapaksa told visiting UK Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Secretary of State David Miliband that the humanitarian operation to free innocent Tamil civilians held hostage by the LTTE would continue unabated. He also told him that strict instructions have been given by him to the Security Forces to ensure that no civilian would be harmed in any way in conducting the operation. The President said so when he met the UK Minister together with French Foreign and European Affairs Minister Dr. Bernard Kouchner at Embilipitiya yesterday evening. During the discussions which were held in a cordial atmosphere centred round present developments in the North. The President also informed the visiting Ministers that the LTTE has not allowed any development activity to take place in the North during the last three decades and that the Government has decided to implement a vigorous development drive there. He also called for support of the international community for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the North. French Minister Dr. Kouchner expressed his appreciation of the Government’s program of liberating the northern people from terrorism and promised his government’s support for welfare programs for the IDPs. Earlier the two visitors visited IDP welfare centres in Vavuniya and the Field Hospital donated by the French government in Chettikulam. They also held discussions with Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishard Bathiudeen, Vavuniya Government Agent Ms. Charles and Competent Authority Major General W. A. Chandrasiri (Full report in Daily News).

Indian military on red alert to block LTTE cadres - India has put its security forces on alert along its southern coastline to prevent beleaguered LTTE cadres fleeing Mullaitivu from entering this country. Indian Army’s Vice Chief Lietenant General Noble Thamburaj said here today that his troops along with the Navy and Coast Guard are on alert along the southern coastline. Talking to reporters, he said: "The Coast Guard and the Indian Navy form the first tier of guarding against infiltration from our southern coast. We have some troops deployed in the Southern Command to make sure that LTTE elements don’t make inroads into our coastline and enter India." After the Sri Lankan armed forces confined LTTE to a small area, there were reports of possibility of the LTTE cadres trying to flee to India. Asked whether the LTTE cadres had made any such attempts so far, he said, "As of now, there are no reports from our troops, especially the Coast Guard and the Navy, about any bids by LTTE cadres to cross over." Tamil Nadu alone has a 1,000km-long coastline with as many as 400 entry points, from which fleeing LTTE cadres may be tempted to sneak into India (Full report in Island).

Daya Master reveals LTTE atrocities - Over 200 innocent civilians who attempted to escape the LTTE and move into government held areas were shot dead by the LTTE, former Tiger media spokesman Daya Master, told the Army intelligence. Daya Master and George Master the former LTTE interpreter are now being held by the Army intelligence in Colombo and are being interrogated on LTTE activities in the no fire zone. Daya Master has said that Puli Devan, the head of LTTE’s Peace Secretariat has told the international community that these civilian killings were committed by the Army. A large sum of money remitted by the Tamil Diaspora for the wellbeing of the Tamils in Vanni was utilized by the LTTE to purchase arms and ammunition and other war material, he told Army intelligence. "The Tamil Diaspora in Europe without knowing the ground realities in the Vanni are participating in protest campaigns on behalf of the LTTE and if they visit the Vanni they would then realize the plight of the Tamils there caused by Tiger atrocities," Daya Master has said (Island).

Is Toronto Tamil Eelam in exile? - By Siva Sunderam in Toronto -   Finally, it appears the Canadians are beginning to see the truth about the Tamil Tigers but it may just be too late for Canada. We publish below a feature from Canada’s National Post that appeared this morning, Wednesday April 29, 2009. There is a Tiger underworld in Toronto that is in full functional flow and its very interests are the ones that have brainwashed the Tamil youth into pro-Tiger terror activities. Every day the Canadian Multicultural Radio and TVI and other Tamil media organizations especially the weekly tabloid trash, and there are many of them, are preaching venom to these young people and they have been effectively hijacked from their parents and elders. This is exactly what happened in the 1970s in north Sri Lanka when the LTTE hijacked young people from the hundreds of tuition centres and made them their followers; and some became their terror packs (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

LTTE unilateral ceasefire a bluff - Keheliya - The Unilateral Ceasefire declared by the LTTE is a total bluff as Tiger terrorists have made seven suicide attempts within 24 hours using human bombs, explosive laden truck, motorbikes and a double cab against the troops operating in Rettavaikkal, Government Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday. Minister Rambukwella said Tiger cadres have blown off three human bombs, one explosive laden truck, three explosive laden motorbikes and a double cab to recapture the Rettavaikkal earth bund captured by the troops on Tuesday. The Minister also pointed out that these attempts by the LTTE was a clear proof that the unilateral ceasefire declared by the LTTE was a total bluff. On the contrary, Minister Rambukwella said the capture of the earth bund by the troops was clear indication that the Government has not ceased its humanitarian operation to rescue the remaining civilians trapped inside the No Fire Zone. “Our primary target is to rescue civilians and the Government will continue with that process. We have not offered any ceasefire,” the Minister added. Minister Rambukwella said the Government took a decision to stop using heavy calibre guns and air raids, considering ground realities first as the use of heavy calibre weapons does not arise since troops are operating in a small area and secondly it was not practical to use those weapons at present. The Minister said the Government believes that there are about 10,000 to 15,000 civilians trapped inside the No Fire Zone (Full report in Daily News).

Terrorists understand only the language of force – President - "We have passed the difficult land-marks of the defeat and eradication of terrorism from our land. Our heroic troops, a vital sector of our workforce, are completing the historic task of sweeping terrorism away from our midst. The people see a new promise of freedom throughout the land, a freedom that was for long denied for nearly two-thirds of our land and a third of our population and working people. Terrorism not only threatens peaceful society, it also gives rise to misery that is the enemy of progress, "said President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing the commemoration meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat to mark the 90th anniversary of the International Organisation (ILO). He said, "In the past three and a half years we have responded to this challenge in different ways. We tried to have a dialogue and negotiations. That was rejected. We were then compelled to use force, the force that is the right of the State, force that is the only language that the terrorist seemed to understand. We used our force with great concern for the hardships it causes to the ordinary people, to the workers and farmers, to their children, and to their livelihood. We had to take hard decisions, and in the end those decisions saw victory against the evil of terror." (Full report in Island).

Navy destroys Six Tiger boats Foils attempt to break naval defences: - Naval troops patrolling the North Eastern seas yesterday foiled a desperate LTTE attempt to breach its first defence line killing 28 Sea Tigers including three female Sea Tiger leaders and destroying six Tiger boats in the sea off Mullaitivu, Navy Spokesman Captain D.K.P. Dassanayake told the Daily News yesterday. The Navy Special Boat Squadron confronted with six Tiger boats including four suicide craft launched from Vellamullivaikkal in the southern part of the No Fire Zone for hours from 4.30 am yesterday. Intercepted LTTE radio communication have confirmed that 28 Tiger cadres were killed during this confrontation and female Sea Tiger leaders Manparithi, Ariyu and Manmadhi were among the killed. The Navy Spokesman said the LTTE facing heavy defeat in the ground was making desperate attempts to flee the area from the sea, but Navy has already secured all sea routes to thwart any such attempts. Brigadier Nanayak- kara said troops are continuing their mission of rescuing the remaining civilians after capturing the 700 metre long and 10 feet high ditch cum earth bund in Rettavaikkal. “The LTTE had made seven suicide attempts to recapture the earth bund using three human bombs, one explosive laden truck, three motorbikes and a double cab during 24 hours ending Wednesday morning,” the Brigadier added (Full report in Daily News).

Calling for ceasefire: A conspiracy of western capitalists - Jayaratne - "The same western powers who once warned that the LTTE, which was one of the strongest that terrorist groups, could not be defeated, are now pressing for a ceasefire at the last minute when the LTTE is facing defeat. This is nothing but a conspiracy of the Western capitalist powers," Plantation Industries Minister D. M. Jayaratne told the media yesterday (28). Minister Jayaratne, after gifting Rs. 65,000 worth crutches to injured war heroes at the Kandy General Hospital, told the media that there was no necessity for a ceasefire at this moment now that President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the heroic security forces had treated the LTTE terrorists in the manner terrorism should be treated. "Why are these countries worried about an end to an armed conflict? Peace means no business for the countries producing arms. That is the conspiracy behind the interest in the Sri Lanka government carrying on humanitarian operations in the north," the Minister said. The country will return to normalcy after totally eradicating LTTE terrorism within a very short time since President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the security forces have taken the correct steps, he said (Island).

LTTE orders civilians to burn boats - LTTE cadres trapped inside the remaining part of the No Fire Zone have ordered people to burn all fishing boats in Vellamullivaikkal to prevent the remaining civilians trapped inside the No Fire Zone fleeing the area, Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said yesterday. The spokesman said the LTTE had taken this decision as civilians trapped inside the No Fire Zone are trying to flee the area in boats. While preventing civilians from fleeing the No Fire Zone, LTTE leaders are preparing to flee the area at the last moment arranging six high powered boats and five boats with a stock of ration packets for their consumption (Daily News).

Can BJP call for sanctions on Sri Lanka? - Yashwant Sinha, senior leader of Baharatiya Janata Party, (BJP), the political face of Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, (RSS), has demanded that India imposes sanctions on Sri Lanka for its treatment of Tamil civilians trapped in the war zone. No doubt and no question that these civilians, as citizens of this country, deserve safety and protection. However, the question is whether India, of all countries, and the BJP, of all the political parties, can ever speak of minority rights in view of their treatment of the largest minority of around 150 million Indian Muslims (Full report in Daily News).

George Master/Post Master - by Tissa Devendra - I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I heard ‘George Master’ ,retired Postmaster, saying he collected his Govt’. Pension before he surrendered to the Army. Apart from George and my former clerk Velupillai[ the monster’s father], it looks as if there are yet a number of pensioners around in the NFZ who get paid monthly by our compassionate government - though the modus operandi baffles me. I wonder what success, if any, this ‘hearts and minds ‘ operation has had (Island).

Sea escape not a reality – Navy - North of Mullaitivu April 28- As two Israeli-built Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FAC) approached the Mullaitivu coast on Tuesday morning a heavy fire fight erupted on the north-eastern coast encompassing the civilian safe zone. The battle is between the 58 Division advancing further southwards, where LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, his intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Sea Tiger leader Soosai are taking refuge among civilians. The raging battle on the ground is evidence that President Mahinda Rajapaksa hadn’t give in to mounting international pressure to call off the offensive. Although the UNP and JVP attempted to capitalise on the unexpected arrival of British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Bernard Kouchner close on the heels of a visit by a top level Indian delegation, the offensive spearheaded by the army is on track (full report in Island).

Dealing with terrorfirmly but decently - The Peace Secretariat believes it is important to share with the world the manner in which the Sri Lankan government dealt with the problem of terrorism. This may be particularly useful to countries that think that they know, or perhaps know that they think, that the entire world is very disappointed that in their efforts to deal with what they see as terrorism they have caused such untold suffering. Such countries should realize that there is a way to limit suffering, and should also be encourage to set an example of best practice. These examples should be followed not only by poor countries with limited resources, but even by rich countries whose size or resource base makes it difficult for them to understand the principle of proportionality. The following principles are strongly recommended – (Full report in Island).

UN resolution 638 (1989) on hostage-taking - The hostage –taking drama that is taking place in the Wanni today, is one of the worst episodes of hostage –taking in history. The tragic irony is that the so called protectors and those claiming to represent the Tamil community are the perpetrators of the hostage drama! It is abundantly clear to all except the frenetically energized Diaspora and their deaf, dumb and blind, inveterate sympathizers in the West that Prabhakaran’s day is over and the latter knows it. He is clutching on to the last tenuous straw of shamelessly hiding behind Tamil civilians and praying for a miracle to be pulled off by his strident supporters enabling him to slip through the ever tightening grip of the Security Forces (Full report in Island).

"We are against double standards" - Russian Ambassdor - Vladimir P. Mikhaylov - In this interview, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka, Vladimir P. Mikhaylov speaks to C.A.Chandraprema, about the ongoing situation in Sri Lanka. Mr Mikhaylov has served in, among other places, the USA and Pakistan before being posted to Sri Lanka last September. He has visited the IDP camps in Vavuniya and takes a keen interest in the unfolding situation in this country (Full report in Island).

Thank you, Maori Party! - by C.A. Saliya Auckland, New Zealand - To the members of parliament of the Maori Party; Hon. Dr Pita Sharples—Co-Leader, Hon. Tariana Turia—Co-leader, Hone Harawira, Te Ururoa Flavell, Maori Party Whip, Rahui Reid Katene. This is written in appreciation of The Maori Party’s decision to block the motion expressing concern about the Sri Lankan "humanitarian situation"; that is, the fighting against LTTE terrorists by the Government forces of Sri Lanka. The reason given by the Maori leaders is very valid: "Because it gives equal weight to the Sri Lankan Government and the Tigers". The New Zealand Herald on Wednesday 29 April 2009 reported that: "The Maori Party has been attacked as ‘disgusting’ for blocking a parliamentary motion yesterday by Progressive [Party] leader Jim Anderton." It is also reported that "Labour associate foreign affairs spokesman Grant Robertson said he was disappointed that the Maori Party blocked the motion." The motion read: (Full report in Island).

Surrender, Daya Master tells LTTE cadres - Two former LTTE leaders who surrendered to the military last week, made an open appeal to the remaining LTTE cadres to lay down their arms and surrender, calling the armed struggle as a meaningless effort. Former LTTE Spokesman Velayudam Dayanidi alias Daya Master and V.K. Pencharatnam, known as George, a former aide to the late political chief Thamil Selvan in an interview with the ITN yesterday urged the remaining Tigers to heed the call of the President and surrender. They also accused the Tigers of keeping civilians as a 'human shield' and shooting scores of people who tried to escape the 'safe zone'. They also accused the LTTE of forcibly recruiting children as young as 13. They also blamed the Tigers for the plight of civilians in the North and accused them of plundering food and medicines sent by the Government. They both said that they were treated very well by both military and the authorities (Daily News).

Tamil Nadu Political Soap Comedy - By Malin Abeyatunge, Melbourne, Australia - Since of late, Tamil Nadu political cinema has become a breeding ground for budding villains, card board heroes and comedians. Karunanidhi and his gang in DMK and Jayalalitha with AIADMK competing and undercutting each other to get Indian Oscar award for the best comedian on this Tamil Nadu soap opera. These two have performed their final acts just before the Indian General elections. Jayalalitha who was once a staunch voice against LTTE and its supporters has suddenly somersaulted and say that she supports a“Tamil Eelam” for the Tamils in Sri Lanka. This is incomprehensible because when  she was the Chief Minister she even got Vaiko the villain of the Soap Opera arrested for having spoken in public in support of LTTE terrorists. Her performance is astounding but the theme is appalling. He calls Karunanidhi’s hunger strike is farce. Then comes the final act of DMK chief Karunanidhi (Nidhi means sleeping). According reports coming from Indian print media, Karunannidhi has started a “hunger Strike” in support of LTTE terrorists another farce but not a fast unto death. What’s he going to achieve by this? Does he believe that our Sri Lankan government will take cognizance of this fact? Nonsense. Of course Sri Lankan Government would have seriously given it a thought had Karuna launched his hunger strike to force the LTTE to release the Tamil civilians holding in captivity to use as human shield. Unfortunately, as usual he has again picked the wrong side of the coin. India lost his son of soil Rajiv Gandhi at the hands of LTTE (Indians have not forgotten this) whilst Karuna-Nidhi is on hunger strike to save the killer Prabhakaran’s life. What’s Next? In fact a hunger strike by Jayalalitha may help her to slim a bit). The audience is in suspense now as to how the comedy drama will turn out to be.? Karuna has already started looking for lame excuses to give up the hunger strike saying that Sri Lankan Government has stopped shelling (which they never did to save the civilians) because of his “hunger strike. This is bull shit (Read full letter).

LTTE killed Tamil civilians: surrendered Tiger leaders - Two top LTTE leaders, who gave themselves up before the Sri Lankan Army, have said the Tamil Tigers used the civilians as "hostages" never allowing them to flee the war zone and resorted to "mass killings" if they failed to heed. Velayutham Dayanithi alias Daya Master, former media coordinator of LTTE, and George, official interpreter of top leader, also appealed to the remaining Tamil Tigers to renounce violence and join the mainstream. "The LTTE is still using innocent civilians as hostages. They don't let them go out of the areas controlled by them. 'Viduthalai Puligal' (LTTE cadres) have killed a number of people in Sudanthirapuram area when they tried to flee from them," Daya Master, who surrendered to the Army last week, told the Sri Lankan state television. "More than 200 people lost their lives at the hands of LTTE in that one area," he said (Full report in Indian Express).

58 Div captures another earth bund: March-on to rescue remaining civilians - 58 Division troops who liberated the Rektavaikkal junction on Tuesday (Apr 28) afternoon advanced further South tiring-out terrorist resistances and stamped another victory, capturing a 200m long earthbund. According to military sources, the earth bund was under construction and captured by the 58 Div infantrymen this morning (Apr 29), following hours of intense close-quarter fighting with LTTE. During subsequent search operations conducted troops have uncovered a dozer and a few other construction equipment, military sources said. Meanwhile, terrorists have also made a desperate attempt to ram an explosive laden vehicle targeting the advancing troops, military sources said (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

'LTTE beat or shoot at Tamil parents, snatch 12 year olds' says London Guardian - By: Walter Jayawardhana - London's Guardian newspaper charged that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, now cornered in a five square kilometers in the North East of Sri Lanka forcibly make 12 year old children snatched from their parents, sometimes beating and shooting at them, to take guns and fight the Sri Lankan forces. "Children as young as 12 being forcibly removed from families as Tamil Tigers make last stand against Sri Lankan forces," the newspaper said. Guardian said children as young as 12 are being given guns and forced to fight on the frontline alongside desperate Tamil Tiger rebels cornered inside Sri Lanka's no-fire zone, quoting UN sources. Those forcibly recruited included the 16-year-old daughter of a member of the UN staff, who had stayed inside the narrow strip of coast where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are making their last stand. It added. Gordon Weiss, the UN spokesman in Sri Lanka, said there had been credible reports of clashes between LTTE members and families on the beaches who had tried to prevent their children being taken. Some of those who resisted had been beaten or shot, he said. "They are sitting there on the sand and groups of armed LTTE come along and demand a member of the family joins them. They ask for one or two children and they are running around grabbing people," Weiss was quoted having said (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Mr. Wood and Mr. Blake We have news for you - By L. Jayasooriya - The order issued by Mr. Wood to our sovereign government that we should permit the LTTE to surrender to a third party appears so stupid that even a child would want to know how his brain box is working. He would like to take it apart and see the way how it operates. The news we have for you is given in the front page headlines of the Sunday Island of 26th April 2009 where our sovereign government has firmly rejected the order by Mr. Wood. So what will be your next step? Fly a kite? Order sanctions? Or as a last resort invade and rescue Prabakaran? So you have many options. I think the wisest option for Mr. Woods and Mr. Blake would be the first option to fly a big kite together but Mr. Blake may not agree because he is now on very firm ground with his immediate boss in complete agreement with him. I understand that Mr. Blake is nominated to be the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia where in addition to the many responsibilities he has in such a big promotion we find it very interesting that he will also deal with Pakistan and Afganistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyztan and Sri Lanka and put them in their proper places. He has not been able to put Sri Lanka in is proper place but he has shown us the true face of America. It is obvious that Mrs. Hillary Clinton has the fullest confidence in Mr. Blake. So such a team should definitely work not for Sri Lanka or any of the subject nations listed above but for America. Let the world see the results.

Northern resettlement begins - First batch of 125 families to be resettled tomorrow: Resettlement of people displaced in the North has begun in the Mannar district at the Musali Divisional Secretariat area and the first batch of villagers will come back to their original properties. The first batch of 125 families would be resettled tomorrow (April 30, 2009). The Government has provided funds for the people coming back to their villages to repair and renovate some of the homes that were damaged, Nation Building Ministry Secretary W.K.Kumarasiri told the Daily News yesterday. The delay of resettlement of displaced families was due to de-mining, a process that takes time and was costly and was done with assistance from a number of countries including India, Australia and Sweden that had provided the expertize and the funds. Mannar district liberated from the LTTE some months back, was being cleared of landmines and was the first region of the north where civilians were being resettled. De-mining was being done in the other districts of the north and progressively all displaced civilians would be resettled in their original villages or towns, he said. The first batch of families who were being resettled would be provided with tents to live in until their original houses were repaired or made fit for habitation but needs like cooking utensil and kitchen kits were also provided for all families with sanitation facilities also provided in the assistance kits. In addition to the assistance to repair or rebuild their original homes civil administration had also been set up with the Grama Nildharis already appointed and police stations also set up in that area of the district. The same pattern of resettlement of people in the Eastern Province was being followed in the Northern Province, he noted (Full report in Daily News).

GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER SAYS THE TAMIL TIGERS BEAT OR SHOOT AT PARENTS SNATCH 12 YEAR OLDS AND FORCIBLY MAKE THEM FIGHT - By Walter Jayawardhana - London’s Guardian newspaper charged that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, now cornered in a five square kilometers in the North East of Sri Lanka forcibly make 12 year old children snatched from their parents, sometimes beating and shooting at them, to take guns and fight the Sri Lankan forces. “Children as young as 12 being forcibly removed from families as Tamil Tigers make last stand against Sri Lankan forces,” the newspaper said. "They have been taking children as young as 12, handing them a gun and marching them off and putting them to work. They are not being seen again by their families." As the fighting intentisifes, the LTTE is running short of experienced fighters and is relying once again on children to boost its numbers, the Guardian said.. Weiss said many children living in areas controlled by the LTTE before the latest offensive received military training as part of their schooling. He added that the 16-year-old UN family member had now managed to escape from the fighting (EOM).

FOREIGN MINISTER OF SWEDEN CARL BILDT DENIED VISA TO VISIT SRI LANKA - By Walter Jayawardhana - The European delegation of Foreign Ministers coming to Sri Lanka will lack any Nordic presence as Sri Lanka has not issued a visa to Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to be accompanied with the British Foreign Minister David Miliband and the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner. Sri Lanka asked Foreign Minister Bildt to visit the island nation later and said the country cannot cope with that many visits at the same time. Sri Lanka had strained relations with her former peace negotiators but the country’s main concern was another Nordic country, Norway who was terminated as a peace facilitator recently. Swedish Foreign Minister told a news agency: “The Sri Lankan authorities have said that they don't accept me. I am not persona non grata because they say I am welcome at another time, but I am not intending to take up that invitation." Sweden’s top diplomat in Colombo, the charge d’affaires Borje Mattson was recalled for consultations and Bildt has not explained why he wanted to accompany his British and French counterparts. But according to British sources Foreign Minister David Miliband and French counterpart Bernard Kouchner will go ahead with their plan to visit Sri Lanka as scheduled. They are scheduled "to address the humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka and the continuing grave risk to civilians in the conflict zone".

Resettlement of IDP in the North from tomorrow - The Government will commence its programme to resettle IDPs from the Mannar District tomorrow (30) with the participation of high ranking politicians, Presidential Secretariat sources said yesterday. Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Rishard A. Badhuideen said the Treasury would fund the initial cost of the resettlement programme. The Resettlement of IDPs under the Uthuru Vasanthaye programme was being implemented on the lines of the Nagenahira Navodaya Programme in the Eastern Province. Minister Badhuideen, formerly a displaced person from the Mannar District said that the gratitude of all should go Secretary of Defence Col. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and the valiant members of the Security Forces and Police for liberating the district from the clutches of the LTTE terrorists making way for the innocent civilians to be resettled. If not for Senior Presidential Advisor MP Basil Rajapaksa who had been a tower of strength in providing advice, assistance and directing those concerned to carry out demining in the district matters could have got further delayed, he said (Full report in Island).

New promise of freedom After victory over terrorism: We have passed the difficult land-marks of the defeat and eradication of terrorism from our land. Our heroic troops, a vital sector of our workforce, are completing the historic task of sweeping terrorism away from our midst, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing a ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of the International Labour Organization (ILO) at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. “The people see a new promise of freedom throughout the land, a freedom that was for long denied for nearly two-thirds of our land and a third of our population and working people. “Terrorism not only threatens peaceful society, it also gives rise to misery that is the enemy of progress,” he said. “In the past three and a half years we have responded to this challenge in different ways. Govt. won’t give into intl. pressure - Dullas - The Government will not give in to any international intervention where the LTTE is concerned and the security forces will continue with their humanitarian operations in Mullaitivu, Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, said at a press conference yesterday. He said even the super powers have no right to interfere in Sri Lanka’s internal matters but any concerned country had the right to inquire into the welfare of innocent civilians. An emotional Alahapperuma said journalists should not term innocent civilians as internally displaced people who are being liberated after 25 years. Vellupillai Prabhakaran and the LTTE should be termed IDPs instead. He said taking into consideration the safety of those civilians the Government took the decision to avoid the use of heavy weapons. Following that decision on Monday morning, 22 LTTE cadres surrendered to the security forces (Island).

LTTE lorry-bomb attack thwarted Troops capture 700-foot earth bund - The army early yesterday thwarted a desperate LTTE attempt to target troops with an explosive laden lorry by firing on it as it sped towards them from inside the ‘No Fire’ zone south of Valayanmadam. The LTTE attempt came hours after the government announced an end to heavy combat operations and minutes after the troops, continuing their rescue operation, captured a 700-foot-long earth bund built by the Tigers across Rektavaikkal in the NFZ to protect the tiny strip of land where the LTTE leadership and its remaining cadres are holed up. Troops found the bodies of seven Tigers, a multi purpose machine gun (MPMG), three I-com sets, ammunition and other LTTE items, the military said. Minutes after the capture, the LTTE in desperation sent a C-4 explosives laden lorry packed with explosives speeding towards the troops. However, troops on seeing the speeding bomb fired on the vehicle causing it to explode short of its target. Several soldiers sustained injuries in the blast and the lorry was reduced to ashes, the Military said. The LTTE attempt came on the eve of British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner arriving in Colombo to mediate an end to the conflict and press the government to agree to a cease-fire (Island).

No visa denial for Swedish FM ; His visit expected in May: The attention of the Government of Sri Lanka has been drawn to reported statements alleging that a visa had been denied to the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to visit Sri Lanka together with the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Therefore the allegation that a visa had been denied to the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to visit Sri Lanka together with the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband is baseless, it added. The statement further said: “Further it may noted that when the visits by the Foreign Minister of France and the British Foreign Secretary were discussed with Sri Lanka both at Presidential and Ministerial levels, there was no indication of the participation of the Swedish Foreign Minister. The Government of Sri Lanka envisages the visits of the French and the British Foreign Ministers purely on a bilateral basis and not in terms of their membership in a regional or United Nations context. Further it was found to be rather unwieldy to facilitate three Foreign Ministers at one given time at such short notice. In addition, there is an EU-troika visit scheduled to take place from May 12-13, 2009 where Sweden would be represented (Full report in Daily News).

BASL calls for aid for IDPs - The Bar Association of Sri Lanka in a press release issued yesterday called upon its members to assist its endeavour to provide relief aid to internally displaced persons. The BASL Secretariat situated at No.153, Mihindu Mawatha, Colombo 12 will collect bottled water, medicine, dry foods, milk powder, toiletry, new clothes, towels, bed linen or cash donations from May 2 to May 9 during office hours. For further details please contact U. Rohan de Silva, on telephone numbers 2447134 or 0777764521 (Island).

Miliband reiterates call for ceasefire - British Foreign Secretary David Miliband yesterday said Britain reiterates and maintains its call for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. "I have noted the LTTE’s announcement of a unilateral ceasefire earlier today. I therefore urge the Government of Sri Lanka to reinstate their own ceasefire, so that those civilians who remain trapped in the conflict zone can move to safety," he said in a statement issued by the British High Commission in Colombo. Miliband said the safety of civilians was of paramount importance and both sides must comply fully with international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians at all times. "I welcome the current visit to Sri Lanka by Sir John Holmes, UN Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs. As discussed by the Prime Minister and President Rajapaksa earlier today, I will be visiting Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 29 April. My priority will be to address the humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka and the continuing grave risk to civilians in the conflict zone. "I urge the Government of Sri Lanka to allow civilian oversight of all Internally Displaced Persons as soon as they have left the conflict zone; and to fulfil the commitments it has made to improve conditions in the IDP camps, including; better access to medical facilities; transparent registration processes; international monitoring; and freedom of movement in and out of the camps," Miliband is quoted as having said (Island).

Another LTTE earth bund captured - The 58 Division engaged in their mission to rescue the remaining civilians trapped inside the No Fire Zone achieved yet another victory yesterday capturing the Tiger earth bund in Rettavaikkal to the south of Valayamadam using only light weapons military officials told the Daily News yesterday. This was the first military victory achieved by the troops after the Government decided to end combat operations using heavy calibre guns, combat aircraft and aerial weapons which could cause civilian casualties. Troops attached to the 58 Division under the command of Brigadier Shavendra Silva took up the challenge of capturing this heavily fortified earth bund constructed across the narrow stretch of the No Fire Zone dividing the No Fire Zone, following a surprise night move whilst the LTTE was using all forms of heavy weapons against the ground troops. “Our troops managed to capture this earth bund which was one of the tactically important locations for the LTTE to defend their hideouts in the southern part of the No Fire Zone where LTTE leaders are believed to be hiding through their military tactics and manoeuvres, using small arms,” a senior military official added. The infantry troops attached to the 58 Division also foiled numerous counter attacks which came in the form of explosive laden vehicles, sea borne attacks and armoured tanks to recapture the earth bund which was 10 to 12 feet in height and 700 meters in length defending the southern part of the No Fire Zone where Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is believed to be hiding (Full report in Daily News).

Brown speaks to President, Swedish FM not coming - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in a telephone conversation with President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday had said he remained concerned about the plight of civilians in the conflict zone and repeated his call for a ceasefire pledging a further 2.5 million sterling pounds for humanitarian aid for the displaced persons, the British High Commission said yesterday. It said Britains International Development Minister Mike Foster would be visiting Sri Lanka to conduct a humanitarian assessment. President Rajapaksa had invited Des Browne and a cross-party group of British MPs to visit soon, while Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake welcomed the visit of Sir John Holmes, the UN Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs to Sri Lanka the British HC said. Although the British High Commission said that British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, together with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner and Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt, will visit Sri Lanka on Wednesday, it is understood that the Swedish Foreign Minister will not do so as he had been informed that the time is not appropriate for such a visit. He would be welcome to visit Sri Lanka in May (Island).

'Prabhakaran wants to rule as a dictator' - It was a useful opportunity to explain the actual situation in Sri Lanka. At this critical juncture, we were able to make the international community understand what is really happening here. Many of the delegates stopped me in the lobby to express appreciation of my speech, and we had good responses at the bilateral meetings we had on the sidelines. They could understand that I have no reason to lie when I say that I feel we are on the right path. Although I am in the Government, I also represent my community. And I am a pioneer of the armed struggle. I fought for Tamil rights, and sacrificed a lot in that struggle, so they were ready to listen to me. The LTTE is a terrorist organisation, and it must be handled as such. I do not oppose Prabhakaran because of some political disagreements. He is anti-human, and can only be dealt with in that context. He has killed so many people. Just as an example, there was my brother. The LTTE killed him because of me. Recently, Prabhakaran killed a human rights activist, Maheswary Velautham, as she visited her sick mother in Jaffna. She worked hard with me for Tamil people, so he assassinated her. Prabhakaran's real problem is that it would be difficult for him to survive in a democratic process. That is why he wants a piece of land, so that he can rule as a dictator. The LTTE must be dealt with in the way it understands. Tamil grievances have to be solved politically, and we have already started on this process. I have proposed that we take a practical approach, properly implementing what we have in our Constitution, and then moving from there (Full report in Daily News).

Prabhakaran diabetic, may not withstand sea escape bid: Telegraph report - The possibility is that the Tamil Tigers’ leader will fight till his death instead of surrendering, ‘The Sunday Telegraph’ newspaper quoted his former right-hand man Colonel Karuna as saying. LTTE chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran is a diabetic and may not withstand the rigours of an escape bid by a submarine, a British newspaper has claimed. The possibility is that the Tamil Tigers’ leader will fight till his death instead of surrendering, ‘The Sunday Telegraph’ newspaper quoted his former right-hand man Colonel Karuna as saying. Prabhakaran’s son Charles has already "escaped by a submarine" to some unknown destination, the report said, while maintaining that the LTTE chief may have run out of options. However, if he did get out, "Prabhakaran could find a welcome in the overseas Tamil Diaspora". Colonel Karuna said, "In exile, he could expect to live well. He is a billionaire after stealing money intended for Tamil cause." Another possibility is that the surviving Tigers and their leader, now cornered in a shrinking patch of territory in the island nation, could commit mass suicide, "perhaps forcing their families to take part", the report said. Col Karuna, who defected to the Sri Lankan government, has claimed that the "ruthless" LTTE chief is still in command of his surviving fighters in the island nation. "Sri Lanka lost so many fighters and civilians and Prabhakaran is responsible for all this. I used to say to him, ‘Why did you kill all those people?’ He’s a very horrible man. He has to be eliminated," Colonel Karuna said. Colonel Karuna, whose real name is Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan — was a child soldier who rose to become the LTTE chief’s number two before defecting to the government in 2006, along with a group of supporters (Island).

Human Rights Watch uses barbed missiles against Sri Lanka - by Prof Rajiva Wijesinha Secretary General Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process - Like the proverbial pig sticking its snout into swill, Human Rights Watch has leapt with glee onto the recent declaration by the Sri Lankan government that its security forces ‘have been instructed to end the use of heavy weapons’. HRW has immediately concluded that "By finally admitting it has been using heavy weapons all along, the Sri Lanka government has shed light onto its official deception as well as its brutal military tactics." This was the delightfully dense Brad Adams, who does not understand that not only was the government using heavy weapons, it has indeed reported regularly on its achievements through such means. The point the government had been making was that it was not using heavy weapons on civilians, and indeed its recent magnificient achievement in breaching one of the walls the LTTE had built up, and thus ensuring that over 100,000 civilians could get to safety, was without the use of heavy weapons as pointed out at the time (Full report in Island).

Cometh a pair of weretigers bearing oxygen cylinders - ..... Today, we carry on the opposite page an appreciation a grief-stricken father has written on three schoolboys who were among over 30 civilians killed in an LTTE bomb attack on a packed passenger bus in a Colombo suburb last year. The LTTE has carried out over 200 such savage attacks on civilian targets at Prabhakaran's behest and all those who try to save that homicidal maniac and his death squads now holed up in Mullaitivu naturally earn the wrath of the near and dear ones of victims of terrorism. All the countries that have been harbouring the LTTE in spite of bans have the blood of LTTE's victims on their hands as it is on their soil that the outfit has been raising funds for its terrorist war (Full Editorial in Island).

Eelam in Wembley - According to reports from London, there were second and third generation Tamils in the protest against Sri Lanka at Westminster Parliament Square, with LTTE flags in their hands, and emblazoned on their T-shirts. They wanted a full stop to army operations and a peace deal with the LTTE. In short, they wanted to save the most wanted criminal in the world. They were as much LTTE as the fanatical cadres now holed up in Ampalavanpokkunai with Prabhakaran. They are on a mission impossible, unacceptable and unattainable. These zombies of the LTTE should know that separatism has been soundly defeated by our gallant security forces in the battlefield. Moreover, the alleged supporters of Eelam have walked away and abandoned the promised paradise in favour of ordinary citizenship of Sri Lanka. These destitute Tamils from the ‘No-Fire-Zone’ know the unbearable agony and intolerable misery of life under the oppressive LTTE. They have demonstrated to the world the brutal nature of the LTTE’s terrorism and have dared LTTE’s bullets, artillery fire and trenches to forsake Eelam and accept the protection of our security forces. They are unlikely to play the role of cannon fodder any longer for the LTTE or the hypocritical Tamils in the western capitals (Full letter in Island).

Washington Times Editorial says ......Failing that, the Obama administration should mind its own business. The Sri Lankans are winning; we should let them finish the job (Read full Editorial).
Washington Times Editorial says ......We can only imagine American satisfaction if we had al Qaeda in this position. It is unconscionable for the United States to castigate its Sri Lankan ally for prevailing in its war against terrorism. The Tamil Tigers have purposefully created the conditions for a humanitarian crisis and deserve neither amnesty nor mercy. There are ways to help resolve this standoff that will not allow the Tigers to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, such as providing military and intelligence support for pinpoint strikes against the terrorist leadership  (Read full Editorial).
Washington Times Editorial says .... The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, one of the world's most violent terrorist outfits, are surrounded in northern Sri Lanka and about to be destroyed - but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and European self-styled peacemakers are getting in the way of victory. The meddlers should let Colombo finish off this menace. ...... Last week, Mrs. Clinton played into the hands of the terrorists by blaming the Sri Lankan government for the crisis. "The entire world is very disappointed" that they were "causing such untold suffering," she said (Read Washington Times Editorial).
