The United States' top intelligence agency, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) says that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the most dangerous and deadly extremist organization in the world. The official website of FBI in its tops story said that LTTE is far more dangerous terrorists outfit than al Queda, Hezbullah or even HAMAS. Read more...

Tamil Tiger Terror has come to door steps of Australia........... Ban LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists in       Australia Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 ...... Ban LTTE Tamil Tiger       Terrorists in Australia Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 ......

Current Significant Issues

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a blood thirsty racist group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Government of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo in peace with the other communities. Based on 2001 census, the Tamil population in Colombo district is 12.1% (see 2001 census). So, who is discriminated ? Tamils or Sinhalese? Do you need more evidence ?

Are we serious about a solution based on Indo-Lanka Accord ?

Read more about the 13th Amendment

13th Amendment ........

The ordinary Tamil people don’t care about 13 or 17 amendments. What the ordinary Tamils want is to get on with their day to day life, get on with their agri work in the field, chena, sea, or in the offices and live a peaceful life which they experienced before 1983. We never thought of discrimination, aspiration, grievances before 1983. It was the politicians who planted these poisonous seeds into our hearts and minds. Grievances are there not only for the Tamils but even to the poor Sinhalese people in the South. That’s common to any nationality.

See what LTTE did for the Tamil civilians trying to flee the "Human Shield" of the LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists

Caution: Images shown on this web site exposing LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorist atrocities maybe disturbing for some users. Please proceed at your own discretion.

“Tamil Tigers”, also called “The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam” (LTTE) declare that they are fighting the government of Sri Lanka to “liberate” the Tamils. During the past three decades of their “liberation struggle” they forcibly abducted an estimated twenty thousand children as young as ten and converted them into human bombs or cannon fodder. Tamil parents who objected to the forcible conscription of their beloved children were tortured or killed in front of their families. Finally, after seven futile attempts at internationally facilitated peace talks and ceasefires, all of which were reneged by the LTTE, the democratically elected Sri Lankan government decided that the only way to liberate the Tamils from the clutches of the LTTE was to eradicate the oppressors. Sri Lanka learned the hard way that any “ceasefire” interval given to these abominable terrorists would be used by them to recuperate, regroup, rearm and attack without warning. Tigers, once the world’s most feared terrorists, are now confined to a few square kilometres of jungle where they have corralled innocent Tamil civilians to be used as human shields. If not for the Sri Lankan government’s concern for the safety of civilians, the LTTE would have been wiped out from the face of earth many moons ago. Tigers make sure that those who try to escape into government declared safe zones are mercilessly killed, mostly burnt alive and the corpses are displayed as a deterrent to others who would try to escape. These photos were taken by a brave Tamil who managed to escape to a safe zone only last week (Read full report).

The monies that have been collected by TD for LTTE war ....

The monies that have been collected by Tamil Diaspora for LTTE war chest runs into billion of dollars during the past three decades. But, where are we now? What have Tamils achieved over the years? Tamils have earned nothing but humiliation and misery. There times I am ashamed to call myself a Tamil to avoid humiliation as Tamils are branded as a set of terrorists.

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan internal affairs

The Tamil Diaspora should at least realize now .....

The Tamil Diaspora should at least realize now that LTTE’s days are numbered and any funds collected for LTTE will benefit only Pirapaharan and his top LTTE hierarchy. Pirapaharan educated his son with your money. His wife is running around the world seeking a safe haven with your money. Pirapaharan built couple of luxurious bunkers with all the modern facility with your money. It is therefore still not too late to stop financing the dying LTTE; stop organizing protest marches, demos and rallies as the Sri Lankan government is not going to stop now until LTTE who also brought misery to the Tamils is completely defeated.

"Tamil Hitler - Made in India" Prabhakaran, who killed Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is now seeking help from India.

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan affairs

  • They may be strong in armed forces but still they can't find a proper solution to Kashmir Problem (neither military nor political).
  • No matter how strong they are they still have terrorism problems like Chain Bombardments in their capital city, New Delhi, and attacks even inside their Parliament.
  • With all the technology to win space and with all the high tech gadgets in nuclear weaponry, they took more than 30 years to capture a single jungle thief Veerappan.
  • As a nation, collectively they are unable to derive a proper political solution to have a good relationship with neighbouring Pakistan for more than 6 decades.
  • Their politicians are still unable to convince Indian Muslims and Hindus to live in peace and harmony.
  • India had to draw back their RAW (Research and Analysis Wing - Indian intelligence) wing due to their unsuccessful interference in Sri Lanka that resulted in sacrificing their prime minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. So, they have been unsuccessful in this matter once. So, their predictions are not always correct.
  • India is one of the major parties who aggravated this problem. They trained LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists initially in south India including Prabakaran, Pottu Amman and Karuna Amman. They air supplied food stuff in the past to LTTE when were terribly in need. South India continuously smuggle combat stuff to LTTE.
  • As a nation no matter how hard they try to display a big image of their selves they have critical issues in their own country. They have racial issues, religious issues, economical issues, social issues and political issues. It is not the country we see in Bollywood films. Besides it is highly unethical to interfere the matters of another independent nation because we don't ask them what to do next. India simply don't have rights to do that.
  • South Indian politicians can come to Sri Lanka and travel through out the country to see where ethnic cleansing is. All the southern cities and all the offices there have Tamils living and working in harmony. But any of the northern cities don't have a single Sinhalese.  So, where is ethnic cleansing? So better not use unknown matters for their personal cheap short or long-term political gains.
  • We Sri Lankans don't have any other country to live in other than Sri Lanka. So, if anybody wants to give Tamils a separate country, please separate south India (Tamil Nadu) from what we currently call India, just like Pakistan and Bangladesh, and create a separate state for Tamils in the world. Tamil Nadu has all the necessities for them.

I reminisce with joy and happiness the days before 1983

I reminisce with joy and happiness the days before 1983 when LTTE killed 13 soldiers in Jaffna and provoked the Sinhalese in the South to retaliate. We were living with Sinhalese, Muslims, Burghers, Malays like brothers and sisters and that harmony was shattered. We all were one family of one mother Lanka. But unfortunately, LTTE brought us down to ghettos and taught us to hate Sinhalese people. What have we achieved over the last three decades? We have lost our cream of Tamil political leadership sparing only a few like Ananda Sangaree. LTTE killed our educated Tamil politicians; LTTE killed our intellectuals like Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Kethiswera Loganathan, Sam Thambimittu and many others including many Tamil politicians at parliamentary level to village council level. The many youth both men and women sacrificed their lives in this unwanted terrorist war launched by LTTE and ably supported by TD creating a big vacuum in the Tamil population in Sri Lanka. The Tamil minority, once the next biggest ethnic group to Sinhalese has dropped down to third place by Muslims overtaking in terms population. Who is responsible for this catastrophe? We the Tamil Diaspora and LTTE should bear the full responsibility.

Tamil Tiger Terror Machine Forcibly Holding Civilians in the Vanni as a Human Shield

LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists are using 'civilians as shields', despite constant urges made by the Sri Lanka Government for the release of thousands stranded in its clutches".

Those who are expressing concern about the security of civilians in the Wanni have stopped short of calling for action against the LTTE, which is using people as a "Human Shield" in Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu. The Sri Lankan government has made arrangements to accommodate civilians to be evicted from the theatre of war, as it successfully did in the Eastern Province. If the LTTE lets go of civilians, the question of their security won’t arise. Therefore, it may be argued that anyone who laments about the plight of civilians without faulting the LTTE or pressuring it to release people in its clutches is, either wittingly or unwittingly, helping further the LTTE’s cause.

These two officers were keen and had helped the people of KKS whose livelihood depended on the cement industry. These two officers were Sinhala (Island 26, August 2008).

Between February 2002 and August 2005, 2,069 complaints were registered against the LTTE. Of these, 1,693 have been ruled as CFA violations. The SLMM had ruled that the total number of CFA violations committed by the LTTE, involving all categories, is 3,113. Of the 141 cases ruled as CFA violations by the Sri Lankan armed forces, there are no complaints of child recruitment. Pointing out that upto the end of August, the UNICEF had recorded 1,277 outstanding cases of child recruitment, the Coalition emphasised that "the recruitment of any child under the age of 18 for military purposes ? whether forced or voluntary ? is contrary to international human rights norms." The Chinese in Malaysia is not entitled to a second homeland in Malaysia where a large Chinese community lives. Its real homeland or native is China . Malaysia is the homeland of the Malays where they are the bhoomiputras. So why should Tamils be entitled to a second homeland in Sri Lanka when next door to this island is their real homeland having a history of many thousands of years of Tamil civilization? Any foreigner has only to visit Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu see the difference between the two countries and find out what the true Tamil homeland or native land is.
Homeland .......We should note the difference between a person's land of birth and his/her motherland (or fatherland as the Germans would say). The latter is the land of our ancestors who built a civilization culture and language for over two centuries. Accordingly Sri Lanka is the motherland of the Sinhalas. They have no other home land or mother land in any other part of the world, unlike the Tamils whose homeland is Tamil Nadu established on January 14, 1969. Ninety percent of the world's Tamil population lives in India and 75 percent of them in Tamil Nadu which is twice the size of Sri Lanka .

APRC Proposals ....... The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has already warned the government that it would face dire consequences, at the forthcoming budget, if it backs the APRC proposals for a Federal State. JHU and MEP representatives of the APRC have publicly denounced the Chairman for his efforts to undermine the mandate received at the last presidential election for a unitary state. The persistent attempt by the Chairman of the APRC to sell a set of proposals based on the very same report of the expert panel, rejected by the main political parties (SLFP.JVP, JHU, MEP etc) who were instrumental when bringing the present regime into power, could drag the ruling circles into a difficult situation unless remedial action is taken in time.

Open Warrant Issued to Arrest Prabhakaran

High Court judge Sarath Ambepitiya issued an open warrant through the CID to arrest Prabhakaran and three others who were absconding. He said the LTTE leader was guilty on 51 counts and each count carried 20 years in jail making a total of 1020 years. But for practical purposes the Judge said he was imposing the sentence only on the first ten counts making a total of 200 years in jail.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)

Also known as
The Tamil Tigers, the Eellalan Force, the Ellalan Force, the Tiger Movement, the Sangilian Force, the Air Tigers, the Black Tigers (Karum Puligal), the Sea Tigers, the Tiger Organization Security Intelligence Service (TOSIS), the Women's Combat Force of Liberation Tigers (WCFLT)

Description
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a Sri Lankan-based organization which advocates the creation of an independent homeland in the north and northeastern part of Sri Lanka which it has called "Tamil Eelam". Its war against the government of Sri Lanka has been fought on three fronts: a political campaign, guerrilla warfare, and a terrorist campaign. The LTTE is committed to using a variety of terror tactics in order to achieve its objectives, including attacking political, economic, religious and cultural targets, as well as targeting civilians. The LTTE's campaign has included plans to create Tamil-only northern and eastern provinces, and to this end it has aggressively expelled non-Tamils from these regions. The LTTE also endeavours to eliminate moderate Tamils and other Tamil militant groups that compete with it for influence and power within the Sri Lankan Tamil community.

Humanitarian operations continue to free Tamil civilians from the "Human Shield of Prabhakaran"

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appeals Tamil civilians of the "Human Shield of Prabhakaran"....

"I am aware of the tremendous difficulties faced by the civilians who are unfortunately still being held hostage by the LTTE in the 'no-fire zone'. "Your suffering is prolonged by this action of the LTTE who are holding you as a human shield for their own safety and security. "I appeal to every one of you to come over to the cleared areas. My government will continue to give utmost priority to ensure the safety and welfare of each and every one of you."

Now it is the time to offer U$ 1 or 2 Million cash prize for the "head of LTTE Leader Prabhakaran".

A public announcement that so much of millions of rupees will be offered for the head of Prabhakaran will bring emotional pressure to Prabhakaran and he will suspect every one around him. Under pressure, he may even bite the cyanide capsule (read more)

Time to Put a Price Tag on Prabhakaran's Head - By Malin Abeyatunga, Melbourne, Australia - Prabhakaran is a wanted criminal by Interpol. Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman are wanted by India for the assassination of their son of soil Rajiv Gandhi. Prabhakran has been sentenced to 200 years for his involvement in Central Bank bombing. In addition to the above, Prabhakran is accountable for the deaths of President Premadasa, Ministers Lakshman Kadirgamar, Fernadopulle, Dassanayake, Gamini Dissanayake, HV Gunaratna, Lalith Athulathmudali, Ranjan Wijeratna to name a few. Prabhakaran is behind the killing of Alfred Duraiappah, Rajini Thiranagama, Jaffna Mayor, Sam Thambimuttu, Amirthalingam,Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Kethisweran Loganathan. Prabhakaran is responsible for exterminating all opposing Tamil politicians. Prabhakaran is accountable for all ethnic cleansing of Sinhalese and Muslims from their villages. Prabhakaran is accountable for the bombing of Buddhist most sacred place Dalada Maligawa, killing hundred of Buddhist devotees at Sri Maha Boodhiya., killing over hundred Muslim prayers in a mosque in Kattankuddy. He is responsible of the massacre of 39 Buddhist monks in Aranthalawe. Prabhakaran has blood in his hands of ordering the killing of 649 policemen who surrendered to LTTE at the request of then President Premadasa. Prabhakaran is accountable for numerous bombs and suicide attacks on public places like  Katunayake air port, public trains, buses, shopping malls killing hundreds of civilians. The killing list of Prabhakaran is exhaustive and this is just a few of his killings off the war zone. He is not an ordinary killer but a sadistic killer. Now this maniac killer is hiding behind the innocent Tamil civilians to save his life. He should be captured dead or alive before he makes his last bid to escape. USA offered a couple of million dollars for the head of Sadam Hussein and succeeded and most probably a  tip of his hide out would have come from inside for the allied forces to capture him alive (read full letter in SPUR).

Sri Lanka Rejects ‘Lectures’ From Western Countries - One of the highest-level European delegations to visit this war-torn country in years has failed to persuade the Sri Lankan government to declare a temporary truce with ethnic Tamil rebels. President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka emphatically rejected the appeal Thursday and told Western governments to stop lecturing him, news agencies reported. “The government is not ready to enter into any kind of cease-fire with the terrorists. It is my duty to protect the people of this country. I don’t need lectures from Western representatives,” he said in a speech distributed by his office and quoted by the news agencies (Full report in New York Times).

Why British ‘humanitarianism’ is a joke - By Malinda Seneviratne - (May 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) British Foreign Minister (and would-be Prime Minister) David Miliband has to be pitied. He’s working hard for his constituents, some of whom are vociferous Tamils who are either ignorant about Sri Lankan realities or unabashed supporters of the LTTE. So this Mr. Busybody came all the way from ‘great’ Britain to orchestrate a ceasefire. He had to go back empty-handed but only after he got an earful from the Secretary of Defence. Sad! Doubly sad!I feel sorry for young David because he has nothing to show his constituents who have succeeded in making a mockery of Britain’s noises about zero-tolerance of terrorism. London looks quite the ‘traditional homeland’ of terrorism these days, with hundreds of paper-tigers waving the LTTE flag (not the Union Jack!) and dying to get Prabhakaran saved. David failed them. Why? David really is too small to get such things done. In fact, David, as they say, doesn’t have a leg to stand on. What’s the key word for Miliband? ‘Civilians’. So let’s talk civilians and how Britain has treated them and treats them. Perhaps David might learn something. ‘Great’ Britain is notorious for taking potshots at civilians. They’ve made it an art form over the years. Hundreds of thousands were killed by the British during the happy days of the colonial enterprise. Over 100,000 thousand people in this island were slaughtered by the British in 1818 and thousands of others during other rebellions later in the same century. They were not ‘combatants’. They were what, David darling? They were ‘civilians’, my dear (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

Colonialism, Human Rights, and Scoundrels - By Hassina Leelarathna - The European Union is baring its white imperialist fangs after being outmaneuvered by Sri Lanka in its bid to strongarm Colombo into a ceasefire. The real purpose of adding the Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt to the ride taken by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and British Foreign Minister David Milliband to Colombo is quite clearly stated in Bildt’s blog writings: Writing on April 26 about his then impending trip to the island Bildt says: “International human rights must be respected. …The intention is to – as a way to - support the UN’s efforts – increase the pressure for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to allow civilians to leave the conflict area unharmed … the importance of a strong European voice in the matter - must be given priority.” When Colombo made it clear that it would only entertain the French and British ministers, on a bilateral basis, the Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, whose country holds the EU's rotating presidency, flexed collective EU imperialistic muscle and said Sri Lanka had made a ‘grave mistake.’ There would be ‘repercussions in Europe [that] will influence further relations between the Sri Lankan government and European states,” he warned (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

G8 slams use of human shields in Sri Lanka - The Group of Eight has condemned the use of human shields in Sri Lanka by the Tamil Tiger militants, expressing concern for the lives of civilians in the region. In a statement issued by Rome, chairman of G8, the Group urged an end to the fighting in which thousands of civilians are trapped. "The plight of civilians still trapped by the fighting and who remain at extreme risk from the ongoing hostilities is our primary concern," said the statement. Many countries as well as international bodies have recently called on both Sri Lankan government to halt its offensive and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to surrender to avert civilian casualties. "Strongly condemning the use of civilians of human shields by the LTTE, the killing of civilians and terrorism in all its manifestations, we call all parties to take all necessary action to avoid further civilian casualties," said the G8 statement. Government officials in Sri Lanka have refused to back down, arguing that after months of heavy fighting, they are now in the final phase of a campaign to crush the rebels who have been fighting for an independent homeland for ethnic Tamils for the last 25 years. They stress that accepting a truce will only allow the rebels to regroup (Full report in Press TV).

Sri Lanka tells ‘salmon eaters’ to butt out - .... Writing from Melbourne, Australia, columnist S Akurugoda also ridicules western concerns. “Apart from these salmon-eating international spokespersons, the entire world is now fully aware that the military operations against Terrorism in Sri Lanka is a success, unlike the war against terrorism launched by superpowers, and more than 120,000 civilians have already been rescued by the Sri Lankan Security Forces within three days of its humanitarian mission without any external assistance.” Fair enough, even if we're not entirely clear who the "salmon-eaters" are, but in a leap of logic too far he goes on to argue western intervention is linked to the arms trade. “The secret behind the ‘grave concerns of human lives’ of these superpowers are very clear. World politics and arms trade are closely linked. Arms manufacture and dealing is a highly profitable global business. It is estimated that yearly, over US$1 trillion are spent on military expenditures worldwide … Western arms manufacturers needs battlefields to sell their arms. An estimated 500,000 individuals die in small arms-conflicts every year, approximately one death per minute. Are these people concerned for the loss of innocent lives or their loss of business?” (Full report in National Post).

'It is our duty to liberate civilians from LTTE' - Sri Lanka President tells Akashi

Bogus Humanitarian Mission To Sri Lanka - By Mahinda Gunasekara, Canada - Dear Mr. Miliband and Mr. Kouchner,  Bogus Humanitarian Mission To Sri Lanka It is amusing to see representatives of two of the world’s biggest colonial plunderers pay a joint visit to Sri Lanka presumably to intercede on behalf of the remaining displaced Tamil civilians who are being held hostage by the brutal Tamil Tiger terrorists. Your silence about their plight for the past year when they were herded by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and forced to withdraw from their villages and move eastward with the retreating Tamil Tiger fighters is shocking to say the least. You cannot deny knowledge of the situation as you would have been appraised of what was taking place by the various western funded INGO and NGO groups that operated in the Vanni for the past two decades, and your own diplomats in Colombo who maintained close contact with these so called international relief agencies.   Your rushing to Sri Lanka after a lapse of over 18 months following the forced removal of the civilians by the LTTE, coming especially at a time when Sri Lanka’s security forces have successfully rescued nearly 90 percent of the civilian hostages from the clutches of the Tamil Tigers is certainly not going to fool the educated observer. The advance of the Sri Lankan forces into the Vanni exposed the international relief agencies operating in the region as having callously neglected the civilian population who lived in squalor whilst they collaborated with the Tiger terrorists to bolster their defensive and offensive capabilities. Though you may imagine yourselves as White Knights pressuring a developing country with every lever including the blocking of a grant of an IMF loan to interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka, others are bound to see you as ‘Knights sans Clothes’ (Read full letter in SPUR).

TWO EMISSARIES FROM UK AND FRANCE TWIST THEIR PURPOSE OF VISIT TO SRI LANKA -  By Malin Abeyatunga, Melbourne, Australia - Mr. Gordon Brown the UK PM sent his Foreign Minister Mr. David Milliband to Sri Lank with the message to Sri Lanka to call for a ceasefire. French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy sent his FM Dr. Bernard Kouchner with the same mission asking GoSL for a ceasefire. In fact both Milliband & Bernard (Mills & Berns- like Mills & Boon fantasies) visited Sri Lanka expecting to raise the question of Ceasefire with the President and his Ministers. Even before Milliband stepped into Sri Lanka, he had been voicing his opinion from UK that GoSL should call for a cease fire immediately with the intention of giving breathing space for Prabhakaran to escape. Ditto with French FM Dr.Bernard Kouchner. However, after coming to Sri Lanka this is what Mills & Berns said at a press conference after meeting the President Rajapaksa and our FM Rohitha Bogallagama according to print media quote” No one was here to call a ceasefire to save Prabhakaran but we are here to discuss the protection of civilians that was our absolute and paramount interest. The LTTE should stop fighting, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Secretary of State David Miliband told at a press conference at the Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday. What a great twist of the purpose of their visit by both within 14 hours of their departure from UK (Full report in SPUR).

Let us salute the great nations that genuinely helped us fight terrorism - Sri Lanka is about to conclude her war against terror. The ordeal that about 19 million people have been living with for more than quarter of a century is about to be over. It would never be too early to express our gratitude to all the great nations who genuinely helped us to come this far in this historic battle. Because, the value of a sincere friend would never be so felt, as when one is beset by a group of hypocrites. On April 30 it was reported that the UN Security Council has no interest in punishing Sri Lanka, by withholding funds that she needs at this moment. Before that decision was taken, some countries that portray themselves as the global guardians of human rights, had made several shameless attempts to recommend punitive action against this poor third world country, struggling to rid itself of terrorism. Ironically, these so-called human rights champs tried to justify their claims saying that they were doing it for the safety of civilians, held at hostage by terrorists in island's North. Moreover, they put a number of ridiculous demands on the Sri Lanka government, such as offering amnesty to the terrorists, allowing a third party to rescue the terrorist leaders, go for a ceasefire, etc. Never did history unmask the hypocrisy and the sanctimony of the Western Powers than their behaviour towards Sri Lanka during recent times (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

No time for ceasefire now, but time yet for surrender - President Mahinda Rajapaksa - We have at no time gone for a ceasefire. We will not do so now. There is no time for that now. In the five or six days remaining we have given the opportunity for the LTTE to lay down their arms and surrender to the Armed Forces and, even in the name of God, free the civilians held by them. If they have no regard for their own lives, they should even consider the lives of others. So said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Embilipitiya today (April 30) at the 50th anniversary of the commissioning of the 'Chandrika-wewa' by the late D.A. Rajapaksa (Video in Mawbima Lanka).

Local Tamils lost community centre in RCMP swoop - Terrorist cell or helping hand? That's the debate over the community centre that until last year offered social services and after-school programs to Montreal's 10,000-member Tamil community. In April 2008, the RCMP seized a building on Van Horne Ave. in Côte des Neiges and bank accounts belonging to the World Tamil Movement, a non-profit organization. The group is under investigation for allegedly raising money for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Canada and 31 other countries list the rebel army as a terrorist organization because of its use of tactics like suicide bombing.  Sivananthan Muthuckumaru, president of the Tamil Elders Association of Quebec, acknowledged that local Tamils sent funds to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization, which the U.S. government has labelled a front for the LTTE. "We weren't asking where the money was going," he says. "We didn't ask for accounts." Muthuckumaru says local Tamils raised funds for causes like disaster relief after the 2004 tsunami. "It was the only organization that was helping people (in the predominantly Tamil region of Sri Lanka)," he says. "Mr. Bill Clinton congratulated us," he adds. In March, the RCMP filed a request in Federal Court to confiscate the seized assets and buildings, which remain under lock and key (Full report in The Gazette)..

Sri Lanka says Counter-terrorism must top NAM agenda - Addressing the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Havana yesterday (30th April 2009), Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussein A. Bhaila, urged for greater international cooperation in combating terrorism. Praising the Sri Lankan security forces for their successful humanitarian operations, which helped rescue more than 150,000 civilians from the clutches of terrorists in the last ten days, the Deputy Minister stressed that the impressive advances made by the Government of Sri Lankan in the North under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa heralded the end of the road for terrorism and violence in the country. Each sovereign State has an inalienable right to protect its territorial integrity and maintain peace and security and the rule of law within its borders, Deputy Minister Bhaila asserted. Emphasizing that counter-terrorism should remain on the top of the agenda of the Non-Aligned Movement, he maintained that "no entity postulating or practising terrorism should be allowed to claim to represent any community, ethnic or religious interests." "Sudharmali", senior LTTE female leader surrenders - Sudharmali" a senior female leader of the LTTE terrorist outfit has surrendered to the Samanthurai police station in Ampara yesterday (30th April). The LTTE female leader has surrendered through the Red Cross Organization (ICRC) at around 11.45 am yesterday said the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS), Sudharmali" alias "Thiyagaraja Kamaleshwari is well known as one of the most senior member of the outfit for three years. She is also a resident of Kannadigramaya 2, Akkaraipattuwa. Further inquires are been conducted by the Samanthurai Police Station in this regard are been (Full report in Lanka Puwath).

Troops on Search Operations Find Terrorists’ Useable RCL -  57 DIVISION troops continuing to conduct extensive searches further deep into newly-liberated KUPPIKULAM, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU areas for the first time uncovered a useable 106 mm Recoilless Rifle (RCL) that had been kept meticulously intact inside a lonely house for eventual use by evicted Tiger terrorists. The RCL, kept hidden in the entire sitting room of a large house, believed to have been vehemently frequented by terrorists after driving away the inmates, was the first-ever serviceable weapon of that kind, found by valiant troops who are now conducting extensive search and clear operations in those areas under the command of Major General Jagath Dias, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division. The 219 kg heavy, 3.4 m long weapon with a firing range of 2200-8400 meters at maximum has a caliber of 106 mm, just taking a minute for loading one round at a time. The most effective range for the weapon stands at 1200 m for static targets and 900 m for moving targets, according to military specifications. The weapon that can be easily deflected too uses four types of ammunition, namely HEAT, HE, HEPT and HESH. Its penetrating power exceeds a little more than 16 x 20 cm iron plate and is generally produced in Asian weapon markets. The two types, 105 mm and 106 mm of the weapon have been produced in 1985. All the signs point to the fact that the weapon has been taken into PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU jungles as the troops were moving further north (full report in Sri Lanka Army).

Sri Lanka’s top Tamil ally urges surrender of Tigers - Sri Lanka’s top Tamil political force appealed Saturday for a way for cornered Tiger rebels to surrender to a third party and save tens of thousands of civilians trapped in the war zone. The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), a pro-government party, urged President Mahinda Rajapakse to name an international agency to which the Tamil Tiger guerrillas could hand over their weapons in exchange for an amnesty. The call came as government forces were poised for a final assault on a small patch of coastline into which the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are hemmed in the island’s northeast. The United Nations estimates some 50,000 people are also trapped by the fighting and risk getting killed. International calls for a truce to allow the civilians out have been rejected by Colombo. “I suggest that an international agency, acceptable to the government, be selected to visit (the rebel-held area of) Wanni and persuade the LTTE to allow the innocent people to go out freely,” TULF leader V. Anandasangari said. He said it should be accompanied by an offer of a general amnesty to those who surrender arms with a period of two weeks allowed for the process. “If such an arrangement is not made to bring out the civilians safely, the whole thing will end up in a national disaster detrimental to the good name of the country.” The Tigers have been internationally condemned for holding the civilians as a human shield and Colombo has been under pressure not to use heavy weapons against the densely populated area. The government on Friday air dropped leaflets over the war zone urging civilians to leave and seek shelter in areas held by security forces (Full report in Khaleej Times).

Special Japanese Envoy meets with Secretary Defence - Mr. Yashushi Akashi, special Envoy of Japan, met with Secretary Defence Mr. Gatabaya Rajapakse at his official residence yesterday, 1 May. A discussion was held between secretary defence and Japanese envoy on relief measures taken for the IDPs who have been rescued from LTTE hostage recently. The objective of Mr. Akashi's tour is to assist the Sri Lankan government in its quest for peace and to assist in the rehabilitation and restoration work. Mr. Akashi arrived the island on 30th April (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Mahathaya’s wife and children surrender - The widow and three children of Mahathaya, a one-time deputy leader of the LTTE reached the government-held areas yesterday. Mahathaya (real name was Gopalasmy Mahendrarajah) was imprisoned by the LTTE chief Prabhakaran and later executed as he was accused of having links to the Regional Analysis Wing (RAW) of India. This charge was never proved. Mahattaya’s family told the security forces they had left the LTTE after her husband’s death. However the LTTE had been paying some money to them every month by way of compensation, they said. Mahathaya, born in 1956, became the first president of the People’s Front of Liberation Tigers (PFLT) which the LTTE formed in the late 1980s. He joined the LTTE in 1978 and was very popular with the Tiger cadres and among the ordinary civilians. Mahathaya along with LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham were the two key men in the LTTE delegation that held peace talks with President Premadasa. According to the book "Will to Freedom" written by Anton Balasingham’s Australian-born wife Adele, the LTTE killed 257 people along with Mahathaya on 28th December 1994 on various allegations (Island).

Strategic Communication to beat the LTTE propaganda war - By Ben Silva, UK - The statements made by Mr Milliband, Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton clearly indicate that our foreign missions have failed to communicate and they need to urgently review the way they communicate. Researchers are also needed for intelligence gathering and also to be informed of events around the globe, so that key people in the embassy can respond rapidly. It is a 24 x 7 job and in the modern world response time is important. A good network is also needed to share information. LTTE is already doing the things mentioned above and their fundraising arm may be intact. Our missions need to identify the target audience such as media personnel, reporters and key decision makers and then present them with a simple easily understood message. There is a highly effective LTTE propaganda war against Sri Lanka going on. It is absolutely essential to counteract the LTTE propaganda and keep the world informed. It should be the top and I mean the highest priority job for our foreign diplomats to counter LTTE propaganda and tell the truth to the world. There is an urgent need for our Diplomats abroad to evaluate their communication techniques and methods and improve urgently on quality and tactics used (Full report in Sri Lanka Web).

LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH NEWSPAPER QUOTES GOTABHAYA RAJAPAKSA AS TELLING MILLIBAND’S VISIT TO SRI LANKA WAS A JOKE -  By Walter Jayawardhana - Reporting the undiplomatic interruptions by David Miliband, Britains Foreign Secretary during discussions, London’s largest selling Daily Telegraph newspaper , quoted Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as telling in an interview that the British Minister’s Sri Lanka visit was a joke. In a prominently headlined news item the newspaper said , “Sri Lanka's defence minister Gotabaya Rajapaksa has launched an angry verbal attack on Britain's foreign secretary David Miliband, accusing him of basing his policy on Tamil Tiger propaganda.” The newspaper also reminded , “ It is not the first time Mr Miliband has upset government ministers during a foreign trip. Earlier this year, the Indian Government lodged a complaint about his "aggressive" and "arrogant" manner during a visit to the country. A senior official spokesman said the Government had been irritated by the Foreign Secretary's attitude, adding: "He did not come across as the foreign minister of a friendly nation".  The report further said, “Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the president's brother raged at the co-ordinated pressure being put on his government by the international community and singled out this week's visit of Mr Miliband and Bernard Kouchner, his French counterpart, as a "waste of time". He spoke after reports of a "stand up row" between him and Mr Miliband during a meeting in Colombo in which the Foreign Secretary was trying to persuade the Sri Lankan government to declare a ceasefire to allow civilians trapped in the fighting to leave. Mr Rajapaksa, who is known as a passionate and feisty advocate of completely crushing the Tamil Tigers and capturing its leadership, said Mr Miliband had interrupted him during their meeting (Read full report).

Dry zone colonisation and myth of demographic displacement of Tamils; Sinhalese assimilated into Tamil society in Dry Zone periphery - by Prof. Shantha K. Hennayake Department of Geography University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka - Continued from yesterday - It is clear the process of depopulation of the Sinhalese in sparsly populated Dry Zone had started even before the advent of the British and continued well into the early years of the 20th century. This was followed by the simultaneous infiltration of Tamils and Muslims from their populous pockets located along the eastern coast and also from Jaffna in the case of the former. One of the most significant, yet hardly investigated or discussed facts about the changes in the ethnic population in the sparsely populated periphery is not one of spatial but sociological. It is a striking feature to observe, contrary to the popular and cultivated view held by both the Sinhalese and Tamils, that Tamils have been acculturated into the Sinhalese society, that the Sinhalese peasants who remained behind in the isolated rural villages in the Dry Zone periphery were in fact increasingly getting assimilated into the Tamil community. Then Assistant Government Agent Mr Lushington lucidly elaborated this process in his 1898 Administration Report: (Full report in Island).

In developing country’s economy: No foreign powers could dictate to us - ‘Our working people are intelligent and patriotic’: No foreign powers could dictate to us or impose conditions on how to develop our economy, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing a May Day commemoration meeting held at Temple Trees, Colombo yesterday with the participation of constituent parties of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) under the theme ‘Let us work and build the country’. “The working people are our backbone and terrorism is a burden for the entire world. The Security Forces have by now destroyed terrorism which was a burden on our country for three decades. In view of the sacrifices made by them, we have still to make many sacrifices,” the President added. Speaking further the President said: “As long as the working people are with us we are very strong. Our working people are intelligent and patriotic. Their allegiance to us was proved by the Western Provincial Council (WPC) election results. Some challenged us to take power in the WPC and the people have given a correct answer to them. If we had one more councillor we would have got two thirds’ power. I know how to get it. We never suppress agitations and strikes of the working people. Some termed this year ‘The Year of struggle’. But now they are quiet. We made this an election year and as long as the working people are with us there would be no struggles. We won over the working people because we told them the truth, worked sincerely and did what we said we would do. “What is going on in the North is a struggle to consolidate the right to life of the working and innocent people of this country. It is the responsibility of my Government to resettle as soon as possible, the people who are fleeing from the LTTE and to ensure their right to an unhindered life (Full report in Daily News).

US flays LTTE action as ‘unacceptable’ - The US on Friday said the continued heavy shelling by Lankan forces and use of civilians as a human shield by the LTTE are "utterly unacceptable’’ and asked the UN Security Council to grapple with the sheer scope of the problem. "Both sides have responsibilities to meet. And in the face of this worsening crisis, all of us in this chamber have responsibilities too,’’ US Ambassador to the UN Ms Susan Rice said in her address to the UNSC on the issue of Sri Lanka. She said the US is deeply concerned by the current situation in Sri Lanka, where fighting between government forces and the Tamil Tigers has led to a growing and grave humanitarian crisis. It has left innocent civilians pinned down and desperate. "We are very concerned by the serious allegations against both parties of violations of international humanitarian law,’’ Rice said. Despite Sri Lanka’s promise to suspend combat operations, she said, multiple accounts indicate that shelling into the conflict zone continues. "We have also received reports of alarming number of civilian casualties. Very credible reports also indicate that the Tamil Tigers are using civilians as human shields and have, in some cases, shot at civilians trying to leave the conflict area,’’ Ms Rice said. Such an action by both LTTE and Sri Lankan Government is "utterl y unacceptable’’, she said (Island).

Providing facilities to civilian influx : Govt has full potential - Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP yesterday said the Government has full potential to meet the requirement of the civilians who fled from the clutches of terrorists. He said the Government provides more than sixty litres of water per person which is much above the international standard. He was at a discussion with the ministers and senior officials after an inspection of Menikfarm Zone II where 50,708 civilians who fled from the clutches of the LTTE terrorists have been given temporary accommodation. According to the UN , 15 litres of water are required for a person but we are able to provide more than 60 litres of water per person in the IDP camp in addition to what is provided by tube wells”. The Government has also erected over hundred of tube wells in the Manikfarm Zone II and another 60 tube wells are in the pipeline , he said. Basil Rajapaksa MP along with Ministers and officials yesterday inspected camp Site where all Government agencies are busy in providing food electricity, sanitary and health care facilities to these civilians who faced tremendous hardships under the hold of the LTTE. The officials were ordered that dry rations be provided to the civilians to enable to prepare their meals themselves soon. It was disclosed at the meeting that common kitchens each catering to 80 civilians are being constructed at the camp enabling the citizens to prepare their meal themselves. The officials were directed that the emergency family kits provided by India be distributed among the civilians to expedite this process. Basil Rajapaksa MP lauded the services rendered by the Security Forces in liberating these civilians from the clutches of terrorists (Full report in Daily News).

Pro-LTTE student ends fast after Miliband’s assurance -  A Tamil student, who was on a three-week hunger strike in Parliament Square, has called off his protest after Foreign Secretary David Miliband wrote to him explaining the "strenuous efforts" being made by the UK to secure a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. Parameswaram Subramaniam, 28, went on a fast on 6 April to draw attention to the plight of the Tamil civilians caught in the fighting between government troops and the LTTE. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said she could not comment on the specific contents of the letter as they were private, but added that it explained the "strenuous efforts" the UK had been undertaking to push for a ceasefire and ease the suffering among the civilians (Full report in Island).

Children recruited by LTTE surrender, reveal horror stories - Thousands of children recruited by the LTTE have surrendered. Forcefully recruited by the terrorists, the children and survivors recount horrific tales of the LTTE’s brutalities. One of the child soldiers who surrendered, Sasi Kanakariga Pillai says; “We used to go to school, but were always in hiding. If the LTTE found out that we were at home they would catch us. They would give some training and deploy us as LTTE fighters.” LTTE forcefully recruited thousands of children like Sasi to bolster its strength. “They caught me. I trained with them for two months. I managed to escape,” he adds. There are many such shocking revelations which have come to fore in the refugee camps where LTTE’s forced recruits and their parents are taking shelter. They are happy to have escaped the clutches of the Tigers. Principal Bhartiya Vidyalaya Kilinochchi, Rajendra says: “I am a principal in a school where we lost 100 students in the war. They were recruited by the LTTE and used in the war. I also ran away on March 18 at midnight to save my 18-year-old daughter. If I was there, they would have taken her away. I saw most of the children being taken away by the LTTE.” Visuals of the LTTE stealing and hoarding UN supplies is now telling the world how ruthless this terrorist group was to its own people as the Tamil civilians who escaped the fury of the war tell tales of the atrocities meted out to them by the Tigers. Assistant Director of Eduction in Mullaitivu, K Selvarasan says: “I think they are in a small area. I think they will be toothless soon. They have to run away to escape. But people are not with that side. For the past few months, sugar was Rs. 1,000 per kg and rice was Rs. 5,00 per kg. People died of poverty and hunger because they could not purchase anything.” It was known for three decades that the LTTE recruited child soldiers (Daily News).

Troops advance further south: Another earth bund captured Two huge explosions in NFZ: - The advance of the troops towards the remaining areas under the control of the LTTE is set to be expedited with the 58 Division troops capturing another earth bund yesterday paving the way for the 53 Division advancing along the A-35 road to join with the 58 Division and advance further southwards in the No Fire Zone, military officials told the Daily News yesterday. Troops of the 58 Division captured this heavily fortified earth bund which had been constructed obstructing the troop advance along the A-35 road as they reached towards the Pooneryn- Paranthan A-35 road leaving only five km land strip under LTTE control as of yesterday, military officials added. As troops advanced further southward to capture the remaining areas under LTTE control, two more huge explosions believed to be accidental explosions of two suicide vehicles which were being prepared to be sent towards the advancing troops, were observed by the ground troops in the early hours of yesterday. “The two explosions took place closer to the areas where thousands of civilians were living and the explosion continued fore more than two hours at one instance,” the officials added. The military officials added that at least few dozens of civilians would have been killed and injured due to these explosions as it took place deeper inside the No Fire Zone in Vellamullivaikkal. The LTTE on Wednesday made seven suicide attempts using human bombs and explosive laden vehicles and motorbikes to recapture the earth bund which was captured by the 58 Division troops on Tuesday (Full report in Daily News).

Flashback to a psycho's killings - Among the civilians who fled the LTTE-held no fire zone yesterday were the slain deputy leader of the LTTE Mahattaya's widow and children. Their escape reminds us of the brutal execution of Mahattaya (nom de guerre of Gopalasamy Mahendraraja), which sheds light on Prabhakaran's fratricidal killings to ward off threats and challenges to his leadership. Mahattaya, a baby faced homicidal maniac just like his chum Prabhakaran, rose through the ranks thanks to his sheer brutality having joined the LTTE in 1978 as a 22-year old. It is believed that the assassination of TULF Leader A. Amirthalingam was planned and executed at his behest and that the assassin was one of his bodyguards. He was also responsible for felling hundreds, if not, thousands of rivals of the LTTE including the members of the pro-Indian Tamil National Army. His lust for bloodletting brought him closer to Prabhakaran and he went on to become the LTTE's deputy leader. He became the President of the People's Front of Liberation Tigers (PFLT), which the LTTE formed during its talks with the Premadasa government in the late 1980s. The ever growing popularity of Mahattaya within the LTTE naturally was not to Prabhakaran's liking. After the LTTE resumed hostilities in 1990 by mowing down 600 policemen who had surrendered to the terrorists on the orders of President Premadasa, who desperately tried to salvage a collapsing truce, a rift between Mahattaya and Prabhakaran emerged and with the passage of time it developed into a personality clash. Prabhakaran, true to form, launched a vilification campaign against his one-time buddy and had a black picture painted of him (Full Editorial in Island).

Navy destroys three Tiger boats - The Navy destroyed three Sea Tiger boats including two suicide boats killing at least 23 LTTE cadres in a pre-down attack in the seas off Mullaitivu yesterday. The Navy destroyed three Sea Tiger boats including two suicide boats killing at least 23 LTTE cadres in a pre-down attack in the seas off Mullaitivu yesterday. Navy spokesman, Captain D.P.K. Dassanayake said the Navy patrolling three nautical miles in the Mullaitivu sea observed a cluster of LTTE boats deployed from Puthumathalan in the No Fire Zone heading towards the currently established Navy first defence line. The Navy’s Special Boat Squadron (SBS), Fast Attack Craft (FAC) and Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) had engaged a cluster of two Sea Tiger suicide craft and an attack craft attempting to launch a suicide attack on the Naval craft. ”Two suicide craft laden with high explosives and another attack craft were completely destroyed in the fierce sea battle that erupted in the Mullaitivu sea. At least 23 sea terrorists were killed. Intercepted LTTE communications revealed that Sea Tigers have suffered heavy damages in the confrontation”, Captain Dassanayake added (Daily News).

Foreign Ministers’ visit a flop - C. Silva - The much hyped trip of the Foreign Ministers of France and Britain has turned out to be damp sby quib. Their joint calls for a ceasefire to the delight of Humanitarian agencies have fallen on deaf ears in Colombo. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has stated categorically that the LTTE has little time left to surrender and called on the foreign envoys and the international community not to heed the propaganda of the LTTE and its supporters in the diaspora. The majority of Tamils and Sinhalese have been saying that the Tigers’ goal is Eelam any negotiation that does not guarantee such an eventual outcome is doomed to fail. Already Tamilnet has said that the visit of the foreign ministers was a failure and the Tamil Tiger representative Puldevan speaking with BBC correspondent in Colombo Charles Haviland said the Tigers would not surrender until they achieved Tamil people’s legitimate rights i. e. nothing short of Eelam. We need now to finish this war once and for all the remaining cadres have to surrender (Island).

Army Chief inspects IDP facilities - Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, accompanied by several other high ranking Army officers toured the Vanni on Thursday, in a bid to obtain first hand information on the progress made by troops, engaged in the final phase of their rescue mission to save trapped civilians in the ‘safe zone’ & facilities made available to the rescued ones. According to the Army, the Commander had personally gone through detailed reports, presented by his field commanders on the ground realities and the methodical, but steady progress in the final rescue operation. After going through detailed reports, the Commander had given necessary instructions for relevant officers to carry forward the ‘humanitarian mission’ with emphasis on civilian safety, they added. Also the Commander during his tour had looked into the facilities available for civilians who have been seeking refuge from the military in large numbers during recent times. He had advised senior field officers to provide maximum facilities possible and necessary protection for these IDP’s who have kept faith in the military, while escaping Tiger clutches amidst numerous difficulties. The Commander and other senior officers were received by the 57 Division Commander Major General Jagath Dias at the Air Force Base in the Vanni on arrival (Daily News).

Tale of two brothers - The episode surrounding the escape of young brothers Sajeevan (13) and Sujeeva (11) from the clutches of the LTTE in the No Fire Zone should provide food for thought to those haranguing Sri Lanka about her human rights. It should also open the eyes of the Tamil Nadu politicians shedding copious tears for the Tamil civilians as to who the real inquisitors of their brethren across the Palk Straits are. The harrowing ordeal of two young escapees from the LTTE as recounted on page three of our edition yesterday gives but a glimpse of the oppression and the privations forced on the population by the outfit. The duo were among the fortunate to flee the LTTE when they along with some 521 were rescued by the Navy and ferried to Pulmodai aboard an ICRC vessel. As with the multitudes now streaming into the cleared areas they too had a grim tale to recount and poured forth their nightmare experience under an outfit who claim to be their liberators. Not so fortunate as they was their 20 year old sister who had gone into hiding after refusing to join the LTTE fighting cadres. Their parents were not allowed to accompany them. The two lads had led a nomadic existence since January when the battle for Mullaitivu commenced (Full Editorial in Daily News).

United Nations Security Council says: No need to punish Sri Lanka - U.N. Security Council members see no point withholding an IMF loan or taking other steps to punish Sri Lanka. Mexican Ambassador Claude Heller, President of the 15-nation Council, told reporters on Thursday after an informal session on Sri Lanka, a Reuters news report said. Asked if all Council members agreed that penalties such as withholding the $1.9 billion loan were unnecessary, Heller said, “Absolutely.” British Ambassador John Sawers said London agreed punishing Sri Lanka was not on the Security Council agenda. “We’re not in the job of penalising the government of Sri Lanka,” Sawers said. “We want to help the government of Sri Lanka to address this problem. I just wish that the government... was more open to the offers of help that have been extended to it.” (Daily News).

Sri Lanka: Terrorism retarded development, brought human misery also challenged peace and stability -: The Tamil people President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing in the May Day celebrations held at Temple Treesabroad, who carry out demonstrations in front of Sri Lankan embassies, and attack the High Commissions of India, say nothing about lakhs of Tamil people who have come seeking freedom. The Tamil civilians fleeing for freedom are being attacked by the weapons bought from the money of these very Tamils living abroad. "It is necessary to tell the Tamils abroad who support the LTTE and the countries that supported the LTTE that the weapons provided by you are being used against your own fraternal people," pointed out Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa. President Mahinda Rajapaksa speaking at the May Day celebrations held at Temple Trees, further pointed out, "Even funds given to assist the people who suffered from the tsunami in the north, were used to built palatial homes for the LTTE and heap suffering on the innocent people." (Full report in Asian Tribune).

Sri Lanka stance earns plaudits - Sri Lanka's honorary consul-general in Wellington, Aruna Abeygoonesekera, has congratulated the Maori Party for blocking a parliamentary motion even though the Maori Party leans towards the Tamil Tigers. A motion moved by Progressives leader Jim Anderton called on both Sri Lankan Government forces and the Tamil Tigers to show restraint in the present conflict so that civilians could escape from danger. But the motion was blocked by Maori MP Te Ururoa Flavell because his party believes it is the Sri Lankan Government that should show restraint in its long fight against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Mr Abeygoonesekera wrote to Mr Flavell saying he applauded his stance. But the reason he was happy with Mr Flavell was that the Maori party had blocked a motion which, he said, gave a terrorist group equal status to the Sri Lankan Government. Mr Flavell said Mr Abeygoonesekera had visited him at Parliament to personally thank him. "He said his Government felt the wording was a slight on the Sri Lankan Government." BRAVE SECURITY FORCES HAVE UNITED ALL PEOPLE : SAJITH - By Yohan Perera UNP MP Sajith Premadasa yesterday said the brave security forces have united all people from Pamankada to Alimankada, Medawachiya to Kilinochchi and Dondra Point to Point Pedro by crushing the LTTE and the UNP as a whole is happy about this fact without any grudge or jealousy. Mr. Premadasa made this point at a ceremony held to mark the 16th death anniversary of his father, late President Premadasa in Hulftsdorp yesterday. “We the UNPers together with our leader are genuinely happy about this great achievement irrespective of party politics as lovers of this nation,” he said stressing that his late father would have been the happiest today if he was alive. He thanked the defence authorities and the security forces for the great service rendered by them in crushing terrorism. However Mr. Premadasa pointed out that there are more wars to be won though the war against terrorism has been successfully completed. He said there are 450,000 people who are destitute and affected by poverty. Coming up with more startling data Mr. Premadasa said 11,000 families are without permanent houses after they were displaced by the devastating tsunami in 2004 while there are 1.2 million people among the general population who are without a house of their own. “We the family members of late President Premadasa and the members of the UNP are ready to sacrifice our lives for the betterment of the less privileged people of this country,” he said (Daily Mirror).

TAMIL DIASPORA FINANCED AND NURTURED LTTE: PRESIDENT - By Sandun A Jayasekera President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday urged the Tamil citizens to tell the Tamil diaspora who financed the LTTE over the years, that the terrorist outfit had killed and maimed their own brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers when they attempted to flee the ‘No Fire Zone’ (NFZ) with guns and battle tanks bought with the funds provided by Tamil Diaspora. Addressing the UPFA May Day rally titled “Let’s Work to build a Better Country’ at Temple Trees last afternoon, President Rajapaksa said the international community and the Tamil diaspora never talk about the civilians who have fled the clutches of the LTTE. Nobody talks about the sufferings of innocent Tamils trapped in the NFZ. “They have attacked the Indian foreign mission in London to force Sri Lanka to declare a ceasefire in order to save the LTTE leadership. Tamils must be careful about these hooligans who pretend to be saviours of Tamils in Sri Lanka. They are not concerned about IDPs but onlywant to rescue the terrorists from their present predicament. Tamils in the country must realize the LTTE has killed and maimed even expectant mothers and toddlers by firing on them in the NFZ with the guns and tanks bought with funds provided by LTTE sympathizers in foreign countries. The world has seen how the LTTE leadership constructed luxury mansions with the funds provided by the Tamil diaspora while others remained sick, hungry and wounded,” President Rajapaksa emphasized. The President vowed a political solution would be drawn up end to the ethnic issue after eradicating the scourge of LTTE terrorism from the Sri Lankan soil (Daily Mirror).

3 Sea Tiger suicide boats destroyed - Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday appealed to the civilians held hostage by the LTTE in the seven square kilometres of the No-Fire Zone (NFZ) to cross over to the government-controlled territory and assured them of safety and welfare, even as the Sri Lanka Navy destroyed three Sea Tiger suicide boats in the seas off Mullaithivu, killing 23 Tiger cadres. Mr. Rajapaksa’s appeal was made through leaflets in Tamil that were air-dropped in the NFZ. He said: “I am aware of the tremendous difficulties faced by the civilians, who are unfortunately still being held hostage by the LTTE in the NFZ. Your suffering is prolonged by this action of the LTTE, who are holding you as a human shield for their own safety and security. “I appeal to every one of you to come over to the cleared areas. My government will continue to give utmost priority to ensure the safety and welfare of each and every one of you.” In his May Day address made at the Presidential House, Mr. Rajapaksa said that it was with the weapons obtained by the funds provided by some sections abroad to the LTTE that the Tamil civilians fleeing for freedom were being attacked. “It is with those heavily armed tanks that the innocent Tamil people and their children who were escaping terror were attacked. Therefore, it is necessary to tell the Tamils abroad who support the LTTE and the countries that supported the LTTE that the weapons provided by you are being used against your own fraternal people.” (Full report in Hindu).

Dying tigers bring new tourism - By Lucien Rajakarunanayake - The tourism industry is suddenly doing much better than expected. All hopes were that with the end of the war against terror and the defeat of the LTTE, tourism would bounce back in Sri Lanka. The inquiries from the travel trade abroad were increasing and many expected that the industry would be in good shape by the coming Kandy Esala Perahera. But all of these projections suddenly appear to have been too much on the conservative side, to judge from what is happening today. If the LTTE and its terror drove the tourists away from the country, the news of the imminent defeat of the LTTE has given a wholly unexpected boost to the industry. Visitors are pouring here literally in their hundreds, and if not checked it may be a surge that will almost match the Tamil civilians escaping to freedom from the LTTE. These are not the cheap Charter Flight tourists that have been the bane of Sri Lankan tourism for many years. Those who are coming here in droves today are heavy spenders. They occupy the best suites in the choice hotels. Their stay may be short, but they bring quite a big entourage to make up for that. The new smile on the faces of those in the tourism industry comes from the large number of diplomats, from UN personnel, foreign ministers, national security advisors, secretaries, foreign secretaries, journalists, TV crews and all those who are being attracted by the death throes of the LTTE (Full report in Island).

Dry zone colonisation and myth of demographic displacement of Tamils Eastern Sri Lanka at most times was under Kandyan suzerainty - by Prof. Shantha K. Hennayake Department of Geography University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka - Continued from yesterday - What this tells us is that except perhaps for the coastal belt around the Jaffna peninsula, the coastline and the maritime areas of the eastern part of Sri Lanka had at most times, was under the suzerainty of the Kandyan kingdom. After the negotiations with the Dutch, were concluded in 1638 by Rajasinghe II, the very next year, parts of Trincomalee and Batticaloa were captured by the Dutch from the Portuguese and handed back to the Kandyan king. The inhabitants of these areas paid their tributes to the Kandyan kings. Even if some of the inhabitants living in these areas were from other ethnic groups, which probably was the case, their political allegiance was to the Kandyan kingdom. The Kandyan kingdom lost the eastern coast for ever for the British during the last years of the 18th Century and a few years later, in 1815, the Kandy kingdom itself fell to the British (Full report in Island).

Miliband would have reported ‘useful talks’ in Sri Lanka! - By Ajit Randeniya - A frustrated Miliband ; John Kenneth Galbraith, the influential Canadian-American economist who wrote such influential books as ‘American Capitalism’, ‘The Affluent Society’, and ‘The New Industrial State’, and served as US Ambassador to India under president John Kennedy, speaking of travails of diplomats has famously said that “There are few ironclad rules of diplomacy, but to one there is no exception; when an official reports that talks were ‘useful’, it can safely be concluded that nothing was accomplished.” British Foreign Secretary David Miliband would have provided further confirmation of this wise man’s dictum when he had to report the outcome of his eventful visit to Sri Lanka! Miliband’s (and Kouchner’s and Bildt’s) mission was doomed from the start because of the impetuosity involved and the disingenuous objectives of the ‘mission’. It is often lost amongst the hot-air of the Western countries on international issues that the heroic ‘humanitarian’ campaigns arising from their capitals are not qualitatively different to the pathetic one-upmanship going on in South India among Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha, Vaiko and Ramadoss. Though there is a grand scheme of neo-colonialist ambitions and a bit of vanity involved in the Western approach, the particular busybodies involved are also trying to achieve political ends at home: characters like Miliband and Carl Buildt are trying to show their country men that they have international profiles and they can ‘get things done internationally’ (Full report in LankaWeb).

Amnesty to Osama Bin Laden - By John MacKinnon - Will Obama give amnesty to Osama Bin Laden or Taliban's Mullah Mohamed? Why not, since he wants amnesty for the world's most ruthless terror group. Obama administration and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is working to save the Tamil Tiger terrorists. The front organizations for these terrorists financed Obama's and Clinton's presidential campaigns. Research TRO, Tamil Foundation and Tamils for Obama - all fronts for the Tiger terrorists and you'll find their terror links and associations to the current US administration. The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wants a ceasefire for the LTTE terrorists that will enable the Tamil terrorists to recruit more civilians from their hostages, rearm and return with more terror attacks on civilians. Someone was brave enough to call the West's so-called global anti-terror campaign a farce http://www.sinhala.net/LocalNews/SinhalaNet_Full_News.asp?ID=4874#NewsViewBMThe same Tamil Tiger terrorists purchased politicians in the UK, France and Sweden to force Sri Lanka into a cease-fire that will enable these barbaric terrorists to survive. Currently, the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner are in Sri Lanka to shed crocodile tears and show their LTTE voting block back home that they are doing everything possible to save terror! Address by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the May Day celebrations held at Temple Trees - I am pleased to extend a war welcome to all of you who have gathered at Temple Trees to celebrate International Workers Day. Today the working people and trade union leaders are very familiar with Temple Trees. The working people are more used to Temple Trees today than Cabinet Ministers, as the Cabinet meets only once a week, while on some occasions the workers meet me here more often. However, we are not pleased at having to hold May Day celebrations at Temple Trees. We have gone together with lakhs of working people to hold May Day rallies at Hyde Park and Galle Face Green. We are truly pleased at the opportunity to go with the working classes to address rallies from platforms at Hyde Park, Galle Face, Town Hall grounds or Campbell Park. For several years that freedom has been denied to us and the working people, due to terrorism, which is a threat not only to us, but also to the working people in the entire world (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Sri Lanka President urges trapped Tamils to 'come over to cleared areas' - "I appeal to every oneSri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa: "Come over to cleared areas" of you to come over to the cleared areas," in a heartfelt serious request, Sri Lanka President Rajapaksa has called on the Tamil civilians held hostage by the LTTE in the No Fire Zone in the North of Sri Lanka. The Tamil Language appeal of Sri Lanka President dated today – May 1 – air-dropped to the civilians trapped in the NFZ, assuring that the government will continue to give utmost priority to ensure the safety and welfare of each and every of them. Here is the text of the President’s appeal:"I am aware of the tremendous difficulties faced by the civilians who are unfortunately still being held hostage by the LTTE in the 'no-fire zone'. "Your suffering is prolonged by this action of the LTTE who are holding you as a human shield for their own safety and security. "I appeal to every one of you to come over to the cleared areas. My government will continue to give utmost priority to ensure the safety and welfare of each and every one of you." (Full report in Asian Tribune).

UNOSAT Data on Sri Lanka: Interpretation not substantiated with out ground verifications - Says Remote Sensing expert - The image analysis (circulated and provided to Al-Jazeera TV) was done with WorldView-1 & QuickBird satellite imagery (by UNOSAT) which are acquired from 450 - 500 Km from the earth. Most of the analysis was done probably based on object oriented classification algorithm which interprets an image based on size, shape, colour and other attributes of ground features and the rest of the analysis was purely based on visual interpretations by a group who are totally alien to ground situation in CSZ. Therefore, it is not possible to provide conclusive interpretation based on these analyses without a detailed ground assessment being carried out. Conclusions drawn from the interpretations of these images have no scientific validity. Further, assessment by UNITAR/UNOSAT - 26 April 2009 refers only to the following two areas (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

A Letter to Jim Creskey - By Asoka Weerasinghe - Sir: Gwynne Dyer’s ‘What Matters in Sri Lanka’ (April 29) is the best political analysis that I have read in Canadian news print so far. He has understood the issue well.  It is time we stop pandering to the Tamil Diaspora who has the habit of spinning the truth to the point that it becomes offensive to any decent political dialogue on this file. All the Foreign Ministers from western countries visiting Sri Lanka to pressure its government to halt the offensive against the Tamil Tigers, after been cornered to a 7 square kilometres area are raising human rights issues as their rationale when we all know that they are trying to save the Tamil Tigers from extinction because of the Tamil Diaspora pressures which have clout in domestic politics all around the world where they ended up as refugees. When the White House said that it was “deeply concerned about the plight of innocent civilians caught up in the conflict between the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers”, the Sri Lanka Government responded by saying, go and see what devastation you have done to humanity after you bombed Iraq and Afghanistan before you come and lecture us about your concerns. When the British Foreign Minister Miliband and the French Foreign Minister Kouchner were in Sri Lanka pressuring the government for a ‘ceasefire’, the Sri Lankan Defence Minister Gotabaya Rajapaksa launched an angry verbal attack at both of them. He said “When Prabhakaran (LTTE leader) killed so many of innocent civilians; no foreign minister came or put pressure on the LTTE. Where was Mr. Miliband? What happened to him? Was he sleeping? We are just wasting our time with these dignitaries and VIPs coming to this country over and over again because of your internal problem to satisfy their Tamil diaspora.” (Read full letter).

Media Release of SPUR (NZ) : Maori Party has raised a very valid point - We are an organization mainly consisting of New Zealanders of Sri Lankan origin closely monitoring the current situation in Sri Lanka. As a group that has watched a long and arduous campaign of a democratically elected sovereign government against a band of separatist terrorist group proscribed by world’s leading democracies, we welcome Maori Party’s most sensible action of blocking a motion in New Zealand Parliament on the situation in Sri Lanka. The veteran Parliamentarian Jim Anderton thinks that stopping the violence against civilians that are leaving the combat zone could be achieved by requesting the government to stop the evacuation of the trapped civilians held hostage by a group of terrorists holding them against their will as a “human shield”. He seems to have forgotten that it is the duty of a sovereign government to protect their people from terrorism even using military force. We regret to note that this once astute politician has been mislead presumably by some LTTE sympathizers who wants to cover up the fact that it is the LTTE terror machine that removed thousands and thousands of civilians from their homes, booby trapping and setting ablaze their houses, driving them away in order to trap them as hostages and keep them as a “human shield” (Read full Media Release).

Northern resettlement begins  - Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP yesterday said the Government will not give into conditions from the international organizations assisting Sri Lanka. He was speaking at a ceremony to initiate the resettlement of civilians displaced by terrorist atrocities in the Northern Province at Savariarpuram in the Musali DS Division, Mannar. Over 400 persons from 122 families in Savariarpuram in the Mannar district were resettled in their original places of residence yesterday. The Resettlement and Relief Services Ministry together with other government agencies have taken serious efforts to ensure that these people were provided all basic needs. Schoolchildren of these families can attend schools from today. All Government agencies such as DS office, Post office and stores are kept open for civilians. "Aid organizations should be honest in helping civilians who have fled from the terrorists' clutches. International agencies are engaged in a futile attempt to create fissures among communities under the pretext of assisting Sri Lanka. The government will not allow international organisations to sow the seeds of disunity and division among communities," he said (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Dayan’s muddled thinking - By Ben Silva, UK - On many occasions I have supported Dayan as he used appropriate language to deal with racists who thought they are very clever. However when I read Dayans article on ‘A STRATEGIC WIN, NOT A TAME DRAW ‘, I was horrified by his support for the 13th amendment and muddled thinking. The 13th amendment was forced on us by India, who trained, supported and financed LTTE. It was the idea of an aggressive country and not the idea of the majority of citizens of Sri Lanka. On the 13th Amendment, he is showing that his thinking is as muddled as that of RW .We all know, where RW ‘s appeasement of terrorists and the ceasefire took us to. Muddled thinking and appeasement of racists and imperialists will again lead to many deaths. If we do not want intervention, then we have to be self reliant on defence and should be prepared to fight invaders rather than take the comfort zone and easy option of appeasement. If we want peace, we have to be prepared to deal with external threats including that from Tamil Nadu http://www.amarasara.info/hotnews/20090430-02.htm#Will. Fortunately there are many sensible Politicians and only a few racists in Tamil Nadu. Still we should not take any threats lightly. Also we have to bear in mind, that weapons can be developed o a shoe string budget, if there is a will. We need to get rid of commission earning rouges that kill off innovation in Sri Lanka (Full report in LankaWeb).

‘No question of ceasefire’ No one should act to strengthen terrorism - President: - President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday that although there are many requests to go for a Ceasefire there was no time and need for it at this stage and the Government’s aim was to liberate the remaining civilians in the No Fire Zone within the next five or six days. “Therefore, the question of a ceasefire does not arise at all,” the President added. President Rajapaksa was addressing the ceremony Walawe Urumaya in Embilipitiya to commemorate the 104th birth anniversary of D.A. Rajapaksa and the 50th anniversary of the constructing of the Chandrika Wewa. The President also commissioned the auditorium of the Mahaweli Buddhi Mandapaya constructed at a cost of Rs. 60 million as a tribute to late politician D.A. Rajapaksa in Embilipitiya town. President Rajapaksa also laid the foundation stone to commence rehabilitation work of the Chandrika Wewa under the Walawe Urumaya project. The estimated cost for the project is Rs. 7,500 million. “Those leaders who provided body armours and weapons to the LTTE were finally killed by the LTTE. Therefore no one should act to strengthen terrorism. If someone tries to help or strengthen terrorism, it will cause serious damage not to Sri Lanka but also to the entire world,” he said (Daily News).

Australia opposes the establishment of an ‘'Independent Tamil State in Sri Lanka' - Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama speaking to his Australian counterpart the Stephen Smith, on Thursday, appreciated the continuous interest expressed by Australia on the current development in Sri Lanka. He stated that the close dialogue and engagement between the two countries in this manner was an encouragement to Sri Lanka’s efforts. Minister thanked the Australian Government for pledging Aus. $. 4.5 million in humanitarian assistance for the urgent need of civilians displaced in the North. Further, Minister Rohitha Bogollagama welcomed the constant stand taken by the Australian Government against the establishment of an Independent Tamil State. Minister Bogollagama appreciated Minister Smith reiterating this position in his recent interview to the media. He also thanked Minister Smith for his appeal made earlier to the Sri Lankan Tamil expatriates living in Australia to urge the LTTE to renounce violence and to lay down arms. While thanking Minister Bogollagama for initiating the call, Minister Smith stated that he closely fllow the situation in Sri Lanka and noted reports of the recent visit by French Foreign Minister Dr. Bernard Kouchner and the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband to Sri Lanka. He further stated that the Government of Sri Lanka is winning the war, yet the political settlement is necessary to address the grievances of the Tamil community urging for a political dialogue and reconciliation (Full report in Asian Tribune).

Tigers confined to three sq. kms - Cabinet Spokesman Information and Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said yesterday there were no discussions held with any party about a ceasefire and that Security Forces are on the verge of rescuing the remaining civilians in the No Fire Zone. “The 190,000 who are now in the cleared areas (by April 28) have not been injured in any way and are enjoying food, drinking water, shelter, medical facilities, education, telephone facilities and also entertainment (television). This is because Sri Lankan Armed Forces did not use heavy arms and took very good care of them. Earlier the NFZ was around 12 kilometres but it has now reduced to three to four kilometers. Soon the Forces will rescue the rest of the innocent people from the clutches of the barbaric LTTE leader, the Minister added. Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Government Information Department Auditorium yesterday, Minister Yapa said the number of civilians who had arrived had exceeded expectations in the cleared areas. “Only around 15,000 remain to be rescued. Those who are rescued (civilians) are now staying at 15 welfare centres located at the Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat and another four welfare centres at Wengalawadikulam Divisional Secretariat Division. Four more welfare centres are to be set up at Vavuniya. As soon as the International Organisations give clearance assuring that no land mines are there in the area, all these people will be re-located in their original homes (Full report in Daily News).

Sajeevan (13) and Sujeeva (11): A tale of two brothers - Brothers Sajeevan (13) and Sujeeva (11) are lucky children. They were able to escape LTTE atrocities and reach the Government administered area on board ICRC chartered vessel with other fortunate evacuees. Sajeevan and Sujeeva travelled along with other 521 civilians leaving their parents and elder sister. "My parents didn't get a pass to accompany us. We were living in a bunker hiding from the LTTE. They asked my father to work for them. The LTTE threatened people either to work for them and if they refused they were punished," Sajeevan told the Daily News. From right: Sajeevan and Sujeeva waiting to get registered at the Navy Pulmudai point after they arrived on board the Green Ocean from the NFZ. Picture by Samantha Weerasiri. Sajeevan's 20-year-old sister is under pressure and threatened by the LTTE to join their fighting cadres. "They forced my sister to join the fighting cadres. Since she did not join, she was under LTTE threat and now she has gone into hiding," he said. Sajeevan stopped going to school from last January. "We were living in Murukandi in Mullaitivu. After the latest conflict, we moved to Sudhanthirapuram and to Mullivaikkal without taking our belongings. My other sister is in Batticaloa with our relatives. My hope is to reach Mannar and join my uncle's family until my parents return safe," Sajeevan said. He said there are a large number of civilians suffering without food and other needs. The food and other items arriving to the NFZ are grabbed by the LTTE. "We had only rice and dhal for our daily meals. Human suffering is increasing daily under the LTTE," Sajeevan told the Daily News (Full report in Daily News).

LTTE terrorism was eradicated by righteous principles - Environment Minister - LTTE terrorism was brought to an end by means of righteous and upright principles. This is the secret of President Mahinda Rajapaksa's victory over terrorism, said Environment and Natural Resources Minister Champika Ranawaka yesterday. The President not only sealed the fate of terrorism, but also paved the way for the dawning of a new era of independence and sovereignty ending the era which some leaders of the country have been "going on bended knees" before foreign ambassadors, he said. President Rajapaksa fulfilled the mandate given to him by the people of this country to preserve the country's sovereignty. The President said that he has fulfilled the people's mandate when he celebrated Sinhala and Hindu New Year from Killinochchi, Ranawaka said. "If America aspires to win the war against terrorism, they too must maintain uprightness and righteousness in their policy against terrorism. There is no way that any country in the world can defeat terrorism by means of double standards. There will be no winning the war against global terrorism if one demands action to defeat Osama Bin Laden and acts to protect Prabhakaran at the same time. Britain has allowed LTTE supporters to stage protest marches in their country against the Government of Sri Lanka," he said. "Would they have done this to other countries?" The Minister asked. "It was the Western countries that have tried to protect Prabhakaran all along the way. Countries like China, Vietnam and Russia among others have given us their hand as friendly neighbours to inflict defeat on the terrorists," he added (Daily News).

PRESIDENT RAJAPAKSA ASKS THOSE WHO PREACH SRI LANKA WHETHER THEY HAVE SEEN HOW AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ BOMBED - Walter Jayawardhana - President Mahinda Rajapaksa said those people who try to lecture him may have seen how Afghanistan is being bombed, speaking one day after British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French counterpart Bernard Kouchner have been unsuccessfully pleading with him for a ceasefire with the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).He said in no uncertain terms addressing a public function at Chandrika Wewa, Embilipitiya, "It is my duty to protect the people of this country. I don't need lectures from Western representatives." It was the 50th anniversary of commissioning of Chandrika Wewa irrigation scheme they were celebrating."We have seen how Afghanistan is bombed. Those who come to preach to us [have] seen how Afghanistan is bombed. It must be made clear that before accusing others, you must have the strength to know what you do yourself," President Rajapaksa said. The Sri Lanka military says, the leadership of the LTTE, banned as a terrorist group in the United Kingdom, France and the United States of America is cornered and outgunned in less than five square kilometers of a sliver of a land in the North East of Sri Lanka. But the very countries who have banned them are bringing pressure on Sri Lanka to come to a ceasefire with them allowing the top leadership , who are wanted by the Interpol to go Scot free. The government says this would allow the separatists to rearm and re-group and lead for another few decades of blood letting (Read full).

Criticism as a fig leaf - Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has faulted the government for having allowed Sri Lanka's conflict to be internationalised without taking steps to resolve it. He has also urged the All Party Representatives Committee (APRC) to present its report immediately. What really led to the internationalisation of the conflict in its present form as an armed insurgency and why does a solution continue to elude us? The present armed conflict had a long gestation period from the early 1970s and began to manifest itself towards the end of that decade, when India sought to tame the pro-American JRJ government through coercion. If ethnic violence against Tamils in 1977 gave the northern insurgency an impetus, the anti-Tamil pogrom gave it a turbo boost. The involvement of UNP politicians in that dastardly crime and how the JRJ government fuelled the flames of communal violence are only too well known to merit elaboration (Full report in Island).

French & British Foreign Ministers visits welfare centers - French and British foreign ministers, accompanied by several Sri Lankan ministers, secretary to Foreign Ministry and senior officials arrived at the Manic Farm Relief Village yesterday (29) to receive a first-hand assessment of the prevailing sanitary and welfare arrangements (Full report in SinhalaNet).
